I have never done this. I just graduated in July actually and have been trying to get my first RN job in women services. I too am interested in travel nursing though. If you do that, you'll have to have at least a year or so of experience. People who hire travel nurses need to you be already trained and just kind of throw ya into the fire... Something you might be interested in is international nursing. Discovernursing.com may can be of some assistance to you. This route won't necessarily require experience :) Goodluck!

Nurses in Mexico make under five dollars an hour. Are you sure you want to be a travel RN there?
I understand a week long or so mission to help out kids in rural communities in MX ... but be a NURSE there? Heck no!
My friend is an RN in MX and it is vastly different than USA.

In addition to the above are you fluent in medical Spanish & the Mexican dialect of Spanish? Have you researched whether you meet the licensing requirements to be a RN in Mexico? There are very few international travel nurse agencies but even medical volunteer organizations are truly interested in experienced nurses especially midwives, pediatric nurses, OR, ER but mostly to supplement local nurses so they can build skills to sustain the healthcare needs of their community not be replaced by immigrant nurses. Language fluency in written/read/listening/spoken Spanish and medical Spanish is critical for safe practice and safe patient education.

I have a nurse friend who works half of the year in the US to support herself. The other half of the year she does volunteer work in Guatemala treating children with parasitic eye infections.
There are many humanitarian aid organizations such as Doctors without Borders who accept experienced nurses. You would be safer with a group.

Do you know the conditions between she and her employer to allow for 6 months off?
Per diem status.
