So, earlier today, a friend and I got into an argument. I will be starting a 2 year nursing program after my pre-reqs this fall and am thinking of just getting the BSN because of all talk about it. She is going to school for her BSN. She thinks that if you go to a tech school, you can only get your LPN and not your RN. Then, she said that even if you can get a 2 year degree, why should 2 year nurses make the same as 4 year nurses... which kind of makes me mad. Because 2 or 4, as long as your not in management pretty much do the same thing. So, now I'm thinking of just doing the liberal arts classes and then transferring to a 4 year college, because I'm sick of the whole debate. What do you think?

Yeah... sorry. I just want to prove to my friend. It just makes me MAD that she'd make such a callous comment like that. Like if I were to get an associates in nursing, I'd be less of a nurse than her because she would have bachelor's degree. Thanks for your comments, they are much appreciated.

Unfortunately there's a lot of that in nursing.... a lot of it depends on what you want to do...and where you live. I have an ADN. I've worked the floor, been in charge, a sup, and a dept head (shoot- I WAS the dept- LOL). If you want to do management in a larger city, or some parts of the country, they want a BSN, even if the nurse has been going to school forever and doesn't have any live experience..... You're still a nurse at the end of the day- we all take the same boards. This battle has been going on for decades- when I was in school (1983-1985), ADNs were going the way of the wooly mammoth....

Note how well that went !!!

Get your ADN and be an RN two years before she is.

Then ask her if she still thinks her way is better.

(Not bashing BSNs. IMO, ADN then BSN is the most cost-effective way to go.)

:confused: Just do what you wanna do & *#%* what your friend has to say. Is she paying your tuition? Is she God? :jester: You can't really argue with stupid people (referring to your friend).

Also, there is a big difference between a tech school and a community college....CCs credits are MUCH more likely to transfer to just about any 4 year school.... tech schools generally don't transfer.

According to my admission's advisor all my credits should transfer. Also, it shows on the website which colleges/universities that my credits would transfer to. In fact, she's the one who advised me to do the liberal arts... because I'm on a wait list.

I am so glas I found this thread!! I just posted one asking if ADN=RN and if it does I dont see what the big debate is. You will be done quicker and will be taking the same Boards as a BSN would. It shouldnt matter if its ADN or BSN because we are all helping people regardless and pretty much doing the same thing. I think it should depend on your priorities and situation. good luck to you!

I'm on a wait list for the ADN program, of which my friend thought that I could only be an LPN. While on the wait-list and getting pre-reqs, my advisor recommended I take liberal arts courses so if they do switch over to BSN as the minimum requirements for an RN, I'd be prepped.
