About GPA's...

Published

I'm slightly confused about how GPA's are calculated. I'm applying to accelerated BSN programs and therefore already have a degree. Now, I was a Business/Comm student, so my cumalative GPA from college is made up of grades from classes like Management, Finance & Marketing, etc. - obviously things that have nothing to do with Nursing.

I guess my question is, for 2nd degree/accelerated programs, do schools together a GPA based on your grades in the pre-requisite courses that THEY require and going based off that? My Pre-Requisite GPA is higher than my GPA from my Buisness Comm major, and because I don't know what they're counting, I have no idea how worried about it I should be.

Some schools only look at you prereq grade. While others look mainly at your prereq grades and take your overall college gpa into consideration as well. The prereqs are generally the most important, so I wouldn't stress about the past degree's grades.

Usually the school you apply to will have a website and info on what exaclty they take into consideration. Every school's different.

At my school they only look at the grades from the school of most recent attendance as long as you have 12 credits from them. For instance, I attended college 10 yrs ago and had 20+ credits plus 2 incompletes and a GPA of 2.7. I went back this semester and got 13 credits from a my new school and right now have 4.0. Because of this they will only look at the 13 credits that I have at my current school. But, like everything else that has to do with different schools, they are all looking for something different. I would do some research to see what the policies are at the schools that you are interested in. You may be able to contact someone in admissions if you can't find the information online.

Yea, different schools, different rules. I just got accepted and they looked at the overall GPA from all classes. I would call the school you are interested in and get the info strait from them.
