Hi everyone, I am a American nursing and I will graduate next year. I would like to move to London in a few years and I have some Questions. I have been to the NMC website so I know what qualifications I need to register in the UK. I would like to find out what other nurses or nursing students think about their own experience working in the UK.I would be very grateful to anyone who can offer some advice. I would also be happy to answer any questions about nursing in America.

i have never worked in the uk, however i was born and raised there. i can tell you that london is a historic and beautiful city. you really have to see it for yourself. my grandfather is her majesty's lord lieutenant of gloucestershire, so with my family's status i have always seen the greatest parts of the country. if you would like to do some research on nursing in the uk visit:

There doesn't seem to be an average nurse/patient ratio- or if there is is is rarely met.

I used to work on a 32 bedded ward and it was supposed to be 4 trained and 4 untrained on the early shift, then 2trained 2 untrained on the late shift and overnight.

I now work on a small unit and we aim for higher levels and it probably works out 1-5 patients so i am lucky.

1) Patient ratio depends on hospital, ward type and status of hospital.

2) there is a nursing shortage like there is in the US but to work in the UK you would have to find a hospital willing to sponser your work permit.

3) London is a very expensive place to live with rents very high and although you get a bit extra in your wage for working in London it is not enough to make living easier. There are a lot of other places around the UK where you could work and then during your holidays spend time visiting places of interest.
