Fired after 16 years related to my felony

Wanted to tell my story. Was employed with a home care agency. Got in trouble in 2009 and was convicted of a non violent no drug or alcohol related crime. in 2011. Was finger printed by my employer in which of course they found out about my felony... was terminated after 16 years. With a felony in michigan you can not work in home care or long term care...I do feel at this point my nursing career is DONE. Everywhere you go they ask if your ever convicted of a crime and of course when you say YES, your application is tossed into the trash...... any suggestions?

I also live in Michigan and I was fired today from my job in a LTC for a misdemeanor-unlawful use of a motor vehicle. I thnk the best bet is to move out of this state.

Hi Guys,

It isn't just Michigan. Here in Indiana they do not even allow expungements. A mere misdemeanor and you cannot even work at a convenience store. If moving is an answer, I would like to know which state. Right now the U.S. seems to be on this witch hunt. I, for one, am probably going to have to become a truck driver.

are you in the HPRP PROGRAM?

I thought GA was an unforgiving state as well and even though I have just applied to the Board with a misdemeanor affray(fighting) on my record, I have already got a secured job despite the conviction and had two job offers lined up from other facilities (one actually running a background check the day I interviewed). I know its all up in the board's hands but I was very relieved to know it was not going to be impossible to get a job even with a previous conviction as an RN. I have already turned in my court paperwork and letter of explanation 2 weeks before I could actually apply for the RN license so hopefully that will give me a leg up if a review has already taken place. Once I have everything situated I plan on writing a success posting to let folks know the outcome.

It is very easy to get a Nursing license.. Applied for Lincensure In Florida... Went in front of the Nursing Board. Yes I was given a FLORIDA license.. I think the board knows. its going to be impossible to get work with a FELONY.. SO they give the license....

I am sorry to hear that you were fired after 16 years of, I assume, a good work history. I do not know what to tell you other than to try to find a willing employer. You probably will be able to find work in other areas than healthcare faster for survival purposes. Best wishes.
