Hi all, is there anyone here that is a RN in Hawaii? I moved to Hawaii after getting my California RN license and am having a hard tine finding a RN job here. If anyone is from Hawaii and can give me some tips or advice, that would be greatly appreciated.

btw, are u a new grad? you may consider going thru agency for now or LTC. these are the easiest places to get a job in the industry. i was a full-time LPN in a LTC facility in Kaneohe here in Oahu till i gave birth to my 1st baby. now i'm on-call though. the LTC facility was my 1st nursing job ever since i got my LPN lic. many of my co-workers are new grads and they had a hard time looking for hospital jobs so they did LTC for experience. hope this might help. Try applying for Kuakini medical center, they do hire new graduates!

I moved to Hawaii right after graduation. I did not work in a hospital during school, so I did not have any CNA/tech/general hospital work experience (something I would highly recommend now). I spoke with one HR and they told me, 'there are approx 100 applicants per 1 new grad position.' This was at the beginning of 2008, and I have heard from other friends that the job market for new grads is still pretty grim. I managed to find a home health company that would hire new grads with no experience and I worked for them for a couple of months. I then was offered a job for a new grad program at a hospital, and the only reason I got it was because of the home health experience.

I'm not trying to be a downer ... I have had several friends (one of whom went to school locally and one from the mainland) who have found positions as new grads. Find anything that will give you experience, even if it isn't your 'ideal' job. Good luck. Call HR and speak with them, apply for any and every job you are qualified for, and keep your head up! Most of all, enjoy the islands!!

Also there is a big military community in Oahu so try applying for positions in the military hospitals or clinics- Tripler Army Medical Center is the biggest military hospital there but there is also Hickam, Pearl Harbor, Schofield and I believe Kaneohe Marine Corps Base. Good Luck!

Oh, also try looking under usajobs.opm.gov. Type in Nurse as position and Hawaii as location.....I just did and there were three openings, 2 specifically for Tripler and the other was just listed as Hawaii-Honolulu but all three are under the Department of Veterans Affairs. Hope this helps!

I also moved here in December after graduating with my BSN...we are stationed here with the military. I already have my HI license and have applied to >30 jobs and have had no call-backs. I have a great GPA and a 2nd Bachelors but still no hits. I know it is frustrating and please share any tips you come across for getting a job out here. Good luck!

I did get one offer for a nurse aide with a home health company ($10/hr) but needed something that pays more due to childcare costs. I did hear that many new grad RN's are working as aides and clerks just to get a foot in the door somewhere.

Have you applied with the military side of nursing? Spouses or dependents of military personnel, I believe, have preference when applying for these jobs. Try googing "charts" which is the Dept of Navy Civilian Human Resources or USA jobs. It doesn't matter if you're not in the Navy for charts just as long as you have military affiliation. Yes, I have applied to Tripler with miliary spouse preferrence and to several jobs on USAjobs.gov (even LPN). I have not looked into Charts so I will def. do that, thank you. I also applied to 2 aide jobs (Tripler and Pali Momi since it is right next to where I live) and have not heard anything back yet. It seems everyone wants at least 1 year experience and I hope I get a break soon to get that year!
