Hi everyone! Just wanted to have something clarified. In the AWHONN nurse patient ratio chart posted in several other posts, does a Mag pt fall under an "pt with med or OB complications" or "antepartum with complications"? I work in a high risk ante unit and our manager is saying that AWHONN standards for mag patient ratios are 1:3 now. I would just like some clarification on this. THanks!!

I always thought Mag pts were one-to-one. After all, they are on Mag for a reason.

I thought was 1:1. That's how it is on the unit I work

From what I was told by an RN that came back from OB b/c she didn't care for it as much as she thought she would, Mag patients are 1:1 here

The place I work at now does not handle mag pts. The place I used to work at would have 1:1 for labor, and 1:2-3 for postpartum (and the other two would be easy vag deliveries).

More important than the number of total pts was the acuity level. If there was a mag pt, you wouldn't also have a fresh C/S.

Per Perinatal guide lines it is 1:3 unless the pt. is unstable.

At my last job this is how we staffed. At my first job....well let me just say how surprised I was to be 1:1 on a mag pt in labor when I started working at my last job.
