Hi. I was told today that my supervisor was looking for me. She wants to find out about a patient that fell and she was told I was the nurse taking care of the patient that day. She actually says a nurse told her my name. Well- I would remember if one of my patients fell, wouldn't I? Apparently it happened a month or two ago.

Now I cannot stop thinking about it and I of course cannot call her at home or anything. Apparently the pt's family is ticked. What if it WAS one of my pts and she fell, but no one told me? You know- you go to lunch...

I am very worried now. Any advice?

Just be honest and tell your supervisor if you have no recollection of such an event. If it was such a big deal, why didn't someone say something about it at the time. If another nurse has such a good memory that they can say that you worked then, what happened to their memory about the alleged fall? Personally, as the DON in a nursing home, I hate it when people start throwing accusations and incidents around weeks or months after the fact. And someone (probably me) forget to tell my crew that they cannot call me at home. My staff call me for everything imaginable. They call if they think they are in trouble, if their child is sick, their husband is having an affair, they think someone upset me, they can't pay their electric bill, they can't get over their child's death, or what in the world is wrong with this baby goat!!! I laugh with them, cry with them, just listen, and sometimes I call them for similar problems...like I am about to wring my kid's neck!

If no one told you, how were you supposed to know? That's not your fault. You can't take care of something if you're unaware of the situation! I wonder if the patient fell, was able to get back up, and just happen to mention the incident to their family...and then the family became upset. It's easy for emotions to be more intense for the families when their sick loved ones are involved. I wouldnt worry to much until you actually talk to your manager. Malpractice/neglegence has to have some sort of injury before you can actually be guilty (i'm pretty sure)...if it took a few months for them to bring it up...i'm hoping there wasn't an injury!!

If someone is playing games, that is just SICK..SAD and UNBELIEVABLE.

They say we have a nursing shortage; i'm not sure that is the issue.

Ask to she the chart. Surely, if a pt fell, a nursing note and incident report would be completed. This will either a) refresh your memory, or b) clear you.

Poor baby goat had the bloat, so here we are on the phone...my nurse is in the barn with her cell phone...and we are trying to help the poor little thing. Goats do not pass gas too well, and they can die from bloat. I'll save you the details of what we did, but hey, it worked. Sometimes it's like my crew think I'm also the local vet!

Thanks everyone for helping me make it through until I could speak with my boss. She says the family brought it up a few months after the pt was here- she doesn't think there is anything to worry about-since it was just a complaint and no one was hurt. Now I can go on with my life. And watch my back a little better:angthts:
