Questions about travel nursing careers

I am a second year nursing student. I will be graduating in May and I really think I want to be a traveling nurse. I was just wondering if anyone out there has any information for me. How long do I have to work before I can join a program like that? Does anyone know of any good websites to get information about traveling nurse careers?

Most travel agencies require 1-2 years in a specialty before you can travel. You should feel confident in your specialty and be able to hit the ground running with very little orientation to a facility- I usually get from 4 hrs to two days orientation to a new facility. Imo, smaller agencies pay better and treat nurses better than the big agencies.

I would highly suggest at least 1.5 to 2 years experience in your specified area of expertise. Get the basics down, get your skills down, get the feel of the environment down. The reason I say this is because you will need to learn new charting methods, different medication administration methods, policies/procedures/protocols go from hospital to hospital as a traveler. If you are sketchy on you nursing skills, that is one more thing that can cause you some SERIOUS trouble!!
