Hi,

I am an RN with an ADN degree. I really would like to bridge RN-MSN. My dilemma is this. I just dont know which way to go. I am in the midst of getting my Infection Control Certification--another year at least of studying. I dont know whether to get my NP or Education with my MSN. I live in the Midwest, and do not know how saturated the market is with NP. And on the other hand, as an Educator, would I make the same money as a NP? Right now as an RN with the role of Infection Control, Staff Development, and Employee health, I make $26/hr. Is it worth the outlay of money? What type of jobs could i get with my MSN and CIC certification. Thanks in advance for any info!

I read in your post all of your current responsibilities and your pay of $26 an hour. I think you would be wasting your time, efforts, and money unless you move to an area where nurses are better paid. There are areas where LPNs make $26 an hour in nursing homes. Do you see the disparity? JMHO

I live in IL and at least in Chicago - there appears to be many openings. I live in central IL and openings are fewer. However, in IL if you want to teach nursing you must have an MSN, not a masters in education. This is per IDPH. Check out your state's requirements before committing.

We are thinking of moving to CA after school. Does anyone know of job possiblities there for NP?

Just based on my interaction with family and friends who live and work in California, an RN can earn well above what you are currently paid in that state and sometimes more than what an NP makes. However, when deciding to pursue the NP route, one should look into not only the salary but also whether the role and the demands of such a position is in line with what you want in your nursing career. It may be that the pay is less but you may end up being happier with the autonomy the role offers. Also, I know you would like to build up on your Infection Control background. But remember that the availability of NP job openings sometimes do not allow for prospective NP's to narrow their goals to such a limited field. It is best to approach your NP goals with many options as far as specializations especially if you live in a market that has limited job offerings.
