I'm glad I have found this forum. I am a 38y.o. woman who has failed her first nursing course! I am devistated and confused and angry and sad. I failed the lab quizes that were all on the computer. I don't know where I went wrong with studying. I go to a community college (if that matters) and I didn't find the instructors to be very compassionate or helpful with my struggle. It is the spring semester so I am out for the rest of the semester. I have reapplied for the Fall but I will have to wait all Summer to see if I am allowed reentry into the program. I don't know what to do about this or if I should continue at all. Any suggestions would be so very appreciated.

My nursing school had an instructor who held the title of retention coordinator. Anybody in jeopardy of failing had to meet with her. She worked hard to keep people in school. Your instructors should have given you clear guidance on where you were going wrong before the end. That is part of their job. I am not saying that 100% of the responsibility lies with the teaching staff, you should have been seeking help at the same time. Unless someone meets with you to work with you in figuring out what went wrong, and what you can do to prevent a recurrence, or you figure it out yourself, you might fail again, if readmitted. If there was no meeting discussing your failure, then request one. Good luck.

Do you really want to be a nurse? I would give it another try. But you do need to find out what went wrong and how you can do better.

Hello and don't give up...

To give you some inspiration... my friend (who was 40yrs old at the time) failed his final exam in nursing and was devastated. Fortunately, he was able to resit the exam and was helped through the study process by another student. Yes, he passed.

Today he is one of the best and most loved nurses in the workforce. Just because you have trouble passing an exam doesn't mean you won't be a good nurse. Some people are better at hands-on nursing than the written test type of stuff; and this is evident once they are in the workforce.

But one piece of advice... you will not succeed unless you REALLY want this. Start thinking positive. Start telling yourself how you will pass the exam and how good you are feeling about it. No more doom and gloom. Only think positive.

Find yourself another "good/hard working" student to help you with your studies. You can even get your family and friends to quiz you. It's all about the effort you put into it.

Also, you should have received counselling from your nursing school. If this was not provided, you should now seek it. And, you need to make an appointment to speak with your course/subject coordinators and let them know how badly you want to pass. If they see you making this effort, they will know that their extra work to help you will not be in vain. Teachers like to see students succeed; not fail.

You can do it if you really want it.

Now make up your mind and stick to it. See you in the workforce someday.

Your school should have a guidance counselor specifically for nursing students. Meet with her and have her help with your tests.. try to determine where you went wrong. If you have a strong desire to be a nurse, dont give up. in fact if you really want it, nothing will stand in your way. :)
