i am a new grad rn and i have just relocated to nyc from another state.

i am having a hard time finding a job. i've sent out resumes to all of the major hospitals and have gotten no interviews so far. i have a good resume, great letters of rec, and an honors society membership... what am i doing wrong???

i have noticed that most major hospitals in manhattan state that a ny license is required in the job postings. does this mean that they will not hire my until my ny license is processed? i do have a license from my home state...

any recommendations for job postings and/or networking??

I am hoping to move out of state after I finish school and have been watching threads closely that are about new grads not getting jobs. One scenario that seems to play out in major cities is that you must either be hired in as a new grad out of school into their GN program or have a year of experience. Often the GN programs are only offered in May and October. I am not sure about NY.

did you have any better luck with the jobsearch? i will be in your same position. i am schooling in ct now and am moving in January to NY after I graduate. i'm starting to look for jobs now and most places have told me to call them after I have my license.

let's see here. posting says that a ny license is required - not optional or preferred - but required!

and all states that i know of require you to have a license processed for their state, before you can start work. and no, other licenses are not accepted in most cases.

NY state does have temporary permits that allow unlicensed individuals to work as graduate nurses until they are issued a state license... however only a couple hospitals seem to honor this. quite the different case here in CT where all my friends have already been hired as graduate nurses and will be starting in January before even being eligible to take the NCLEX!

Problem is, the OP is not a GN. She has a license, merely the wrong one.

I am heading to ny too. I would think they would have many new grad programs seeing that NYC is such a big city. I will be calling to inquire and will let everyone know what I got. Any advice, please post...

okay... so far I have found two hospitals with graduate nurse programs. they do mass hires for certain times of the year and you do not have to be licensed. they will sign a permit for you while you wait to test. the two programs are NYU medical and Lenox Hill.

I don't really know how great these programs are. But Lenox Hill only pays $22/hr while you are still a grad nurse. This wouldn't be bad if the program is well run and teaches you alot. i wish i had found it earlier than last night because the deadline to apply for jan is today. oh well... i'm going to just try to contact them for an interview anyways.

I don't think I could survive long in NYC if I was only making $22/hr. NYU's program is supposed to be good but they tend to hire their own graduates. You could try Montefiore, I know the head of the union there and she says they do a good job of training new grads and they have the 4th busiest ER in the country so you'll get a lot of experience.

Hello everyone!! Your lucky you guys are new grads I graduated 9 years ago from a different country and I am a newly licensed nurse here in NY... And I'm considered a new grad since I don't have any bedside care experience... Its such a shame that RNs like me are having a hard time getting accepted in hospitals here in NY while most hospitals are even recruiting from other countries! RNs here from NY are being deprived of that privilege!!! Its also a shame that I came from one of the best nursing schools in the Phil and recruiters here dont even know it! Ironical they accept nurses from other countries w/ minute experience just so they can say they do have experiences... I just dont get it! Whats the purpose of an orientation and preceptorship trainings!
