I have been doing prereqs for 5 yrs now, granted I had two kids during. I am struggling to finish up the micro and chem. I am preparing for a BSN program so there's been alot of general ed as well. It seems like the day will NEVER come I can apply!.....the waiting is excruciating I just want to get on with my career! and be able to have a second income. I have had no luck finding other moms in my area in the same boat. I need some support from those who made it!

I'm curious as to what courses are considered pre-reqs? Here the pre-reqs are all the high school classes. Micro is included in the course. I don't know of anyone here who had Micro in high school.

So my question is ......what is included in your nsg course?

Ive never heard of being able to use high school work for nursing programs.....Here in Calif. to get into a Bachelors program you have to have Micro, Physio, Chem, Anatomy, 2 Englishes, speech etc.

Don't fret, the time will pass faster than you think. I also took that long to finish up prereqs because I had my two kids during that time. I started at 21 and now that I'm 25, I will start my BSN program in August. Now it seems like the time flew by because I learned to appreciate the time I have now to spend with my kids while they are young, because once nursing school starts there won't be as much time to enjoy the little things.

Wow. I went to high scool but never finished. I went back and we have what you call OAC credits. Credits used for university entry and others called 4U classes used for college entry. They're pretty intense.

Thats all we need. And of course all A's !

So what classes are you left with after all your pre reqs are done? 3?

I was wondering why it would take you 5 years to complete and you're not done yet. Poor you. Hang in there. Anything that starts has to end. Law of something or other :chuckle

You'll get there. It took me two years to complete my prereqs because i was working full time and only taking 3 classes per semester. I know how you feel because I felt the same way. You will appreciate having it all out of the way once you start the nursing program though. Good luck

Oh hunny, it definatly won't last forever. I have three that are 4 and under and one on the way and I graduate in December. You will only frustrate yourself if you look at the entire picture and what happens after graduation. I used to do that constently, not even petitioning for the program yet and lining up what 4 yr I wanted to go to and where I was going to do my masters! I learned very early into the program that I couldn't look that far ahead, cause I was losing sight of what I had to do right now. Before I knew it, I am almost through and thinking of NCLEX.

When will you be able to petition for your program? Is it in the near future?

I'm in an RN to BSN program and feel kind of the same, I have to back track and take co-req courses like Statistics, Chemistry, Humanities, etc.

But one day, one course at a time it'll pass! I've got two and and 16 more till graduation!

If you hadn't been to college before, or you did but did not complete any natural science courses it will take you a while longer to complete the nursing program. Almost every nursing program require chemistry, A&P 1 & 2, microbiology, Pharmacology, etc. before you can apply to the nursing program. Some of them also require that you have composition, college algebra, growth and development, statistics, nutrition, psychology, etc as corequisites. It takes time to do all these classes, and if you're a parent who can take only one or two of them at a time because of your personal situation then its going to take even longer. You say you took time out to have two kids. I think its commendable that you're still trying to succeed at this because some others would probably give up. Colleges say a BSN takes 4 years but its more like 4 1/2 to 5 years for many people.

I did not do any natural science courses when I got my first college degree (except for a general biology class that the nursing program didn't accept) so before I could apply to nursing school I had to spend 2 years working on my science prerequisites. My other degree was in business management so except for the liberal arts, math, and composition courses, nursing school was like starting all over again in college. I also remember thinking I would never get done but I did, and you can do it too. :)
