From a 48 year old LPN, it isn't just because you are young, it is mainly because you are an LPN.

Yes, they eat us up.

You have choices, quit using your education, remember you are not paid to think and collect a paycheck, go for your RN, or work as a retail clerk.

It's that easy.

Nobody gives a crap about what you know and you will never be utilized for your knowledge as a NURSE.

You are a "med pourer" and you are/will be called a "lesser paid nurse" or a "lowest possible nurse". You MIGHT be called a "license" by those who will not acknowledge even with gritted teeth that by LAW you are a nurse.

You are a slave with very little mind so just do as you are told and if you are perceived as a threat, whose who you thought were friends suddenly become your enemies and it has nothing to do with anything you said or did.

You are depended on way too much by RN's who insist they need an LPN to get through their work day but you will never get respect.

Your work life quality depends on the mood(s) of whatever RN(s) are there and if the CNA's have a grudge against you that day because they didn't get a raise or because of some force that has nothing to do with you, or just simply because you are an LPN.

You will every day prove yourself and wear yourself out physically and mentally because you will do everything, work the floor as a nurses aide to prove you are not being above anyone, do paperwork, pass meds do treatments everything and all in one day and it means nothing.

Noone cares and if you do all that it IS your own fault, so remember just do as you are told and do it by the book so you don't kill yourself.

Don't be like me and have a work ethic. I'm stupid remember? After all I am an LPN.

There are more CNA's than LPN's and therefore they can gang up against you if they want and RN's make more money and have more power because of the RN degree. You are stuck in the middle and powerless. Your life will truly be horrible as an LPN. Sorry for bursting any bubbles but that is the way it is.

Any RN who is decent to me for the most part is being condescending and that insults me because it is fake. It is their ignorance of what I know, and I am tired of educating them because quite frankly no one cares and it never made a difference.

I do my best to remember I do collect a paycheck and have benefits and by virtue of the fact that the RN class was full I went for my LPN.

Remembering all this changes nothing.

I am too jaded by what I see every day to go for my RN now.

I am a nurse but I am not utilized and that is a shame and a waste because I am a darn good nurse but I am tired of fighting a system that will never change.

let's take this down a level or two. you have to believe in you and your abilities. do not look for validation throught a title (rn,lpn,cna,etc.). you seem to be unhappy being a lpn. would you be happier with the title rn. you can always go back to school to get this title. than what's next you go to work and all the doctors gang up on you and make you feel like, you're just a "rn", than what you are going to go to medical school. this maddness has to stop somewhere. you have to be happy with the choices you make. if you think begin a rn is going to make you feel better go for it. i feel you can feel good about any title; if you feel good about "you" first. ;) please do not give up. you are very important in this field and do not forget this!!!!!

Better to know how it really is and then make decisions than have dreams that have no basis in reality.

Hey i got a question i became an LPN at 20 and why is it we eat our young and why is it some other nurses see me walk in and all of a sudden they think ohh she is young and dumb she doent know what she is doing! I guess i knew what i was doing to pass the boards so i do act young i dont act stupid though and if i have a question about anything i ask i though that is what you are supose to do but what is this about me being 23 i can pick up a person with a UTI or LL infiltrate in a snap just by the way my patient is acting i hate being judged that i am a idiot because i am young what do i have to do to get RESPECT thanks for letting me vent but its gotten to the point should i go pour coffee at dunkan donuts

I am sorry you are having a hard time. Where I work, I do not feel like it is nurses eating their young, it is the lazy trying to get the naive to do their job. We all have something difficult at work. Are you happy with what you do? If you are, I might think of something else like LTC or HH. If you want to pursue your RN, good luck.

I did not say it was not true. It just seems to me that you feel as like you are a NOBOBY because you are "just a LPN "( in your eyes). Or upset because you have not taken the next step. You have to have a postive attitude when working in the medical field. In the OR it was the same way, the doctors look down on the nurse, the nurse look down on the tech, the tech look down on the nurse with the doctors and they would sometimes gang up on the nurse to make her feel really stupid as if she did not have a clue!!!! ( Which I never was a part of) Things like that could break the most confident nurse down. There is no such thing as "JUST" anything. You went to school, ostensibly you did well you passed your boards. Be proud!!!!

The reason I am asking is you have given a description of what YOU think people are THINKING about you...but didn't list a single example of the behavior of others that support it. How do you know what they are thinking?

I mean this in the kindest way possible...if you think you are "young and stupid", then it's true, but only within yourself. It's a matter of self-image. Don't assume that everyone else feels that way. You haven't described any problems you are having at work at all.

If you want to increase your skills...go back and get your RN!

Just realize that no matter what you do for a living, no matter what your education level or position, there will always be someone else who is smarter, more senior, better, more educated, better paid...whatever! But that is true for EVERYONE!

Hi! I think it's very admirable that you became an LPN by the age of 20. To become a nurse at such a young age reflects a great deal of determination in my oppinion.

I am wondering though... (and I promise I don't mean this in a denigrating way; I'm serious) I find it unusual that you write without any punctuation. I'm wondering if you do that at work. Please don't think I am saying you are stupid or anything like that...I have no doubt that you know how to use punctuation. Is this just your casual style?

My mother has been an LPN for almost 17 years (second career) and she is 60years old. She doesn't always love her job but she loves being an LPN and she has told me time and time again that she has no regrets about returning to school at the age of 43 to become one. She had the opportunity to go to RN school but she declined because she is satisified with being an LPN. So every LPN doesn't have the same experience as blueeyedsusan. I am very sorry that you feel the way you do about being an LPN blueeyedsusan...maybe it's time for a career change? I felt sort of the same way you do when I was teaching and after a while I just had to get out.

nursehellokitty04, I would recommend developing a thick skin. I have experienced "the eating your young" syndrome in almost every job that I have worked at outside of nursing. Sometimes it gets better as your co-worker's see that you know your stuff and sometimes it's truly an unfriendly work enviorment. If the latter is true I would suggest finding a new job. In the meantime keep asking questions and ignore the BS. Focus on what is really important: Providing the best care you are capable of providing and collecting your paycheck.

no trust me this is casual see when i come on here i have just gotten off of work i work 11-7 this is my venting hour this is my unwind time and alot of time it is to just vent i dont worry about spelling or punctuation i am not at work and i am not in class and to hit it about one of the things spoken up in one of the other threads no i didnt say i was stupid there is another lpn for some reason out to get me that thinks i am stupid come on i know i am smart i know what i am doing i am pround to say i am an LPN and maybe i am just over tired because i am going to RN school and i work alot of hours to pay my bills but i love what i do and i couldnt see myself doing anything else but this i was a CNA at 15 so this is what i know but you know now that i stop and think about it i want to hit on something else the comment I love scrubs made so even when your at home you still act all prim and proper cause i sure dont i let my hair down take off my crocks and enjoy being a normal person for a min so yeah i am offended by that comment you made come on what was that about??? anyways so whatever thanks for letting me vent like i said in the first tread

By you being a CNA at 15, you have more experience than some of the older nurses. I'm also young (24), and I see what you're saying. I actually just graduated and have just started to apply for jobs. I noticed that when I go alot of the other applicants are older than I am. I just think nursing is going through a transition right now. There will soon be alot younger nurses like you and I.
