2 Years after Graduating

so 2 years after i graduated i went back to my lpn school to offer to refer people for positions at my job which i know welcome new grads and in desperate need of people. everybody seems excited and takes down my info but never calls. why does every lpn student think that they will automatically get some glamorous med surg gig. i remember being in school wanting to do med surg but i knew i had to work in nursing home and took the first job that was offered 2 days after i passed my test.

what did you guys do ? wait for dream job that may never call or took the first one available?

If you had been at my school you would have been swamped by applicants. We could only dream someone would actually come to our school and offer to help us out like that. I say this not knowing any of the details. I can share one experience I had in my last rotation of clinicals during out final week the DON took us aside and told us that our applications would be welcome as they hired new Grads but only part time and when she told us what the pay rate was our mouths nearly dropped. Needless to say nobody applied there because we could make more waiting tables. The pay was really low for the area we work in, it was a deal breaker. In my opinion it was taking advantage. We did clinicals there and saw the nurses worked their butts off and one nurse confided in me that the orientation was only 2 weeks for a new nurse.

People in school may still be in their nursing dream world. When they have been unsuccessful in their job search for a few months, they may look for your scribbled number, but find that they unwisely disposed of it.

From the outside looking in, I want to say I would have called you! I'm shocked that not even one person called. I guess perhaps some people have the luxury of waiting for a job they prefer. Maybe some people didn't feel comfortable calling you. You know how sometimes people say, "Call me if you need anything". For some people it's awkward to make the first step. I don't agree with this because I think you have to be assertive to get a job- but this is how some people are. Their loss, not yours.

I don't know that I will take *any* job (unless I had been looking for a very long time), but I'm not waiting on my dream job.

Agreed, Im not waiting on any dream job. So far at least 3 of my friends have found jobs within 1 month of passing NCLEX. There are jobs out there for new grads apparently.

I would have called your facility. When I passed the NCLEX, I didn't care where I worked! I applied everywhere-hospitals, nursing homes, home health agencies, dialysis clinics, assisted living facilities, and jails. I finally got a job after two months at a jail. The pay is decent & I'm working. And that's all I really wanted :-)

What city are you in? I am looking for work now that I've passed the NCLEX.
