There is a question that involves pancreatitis, saying to avoid demerol and give opioids. However, it is my understanding that morphine causes spasms of sphincter of iddi (this thing keeps correcting my spelling and changing it, but you know what I mean) and Demerol is the drug of choice. Anyways, which is right? I hope this isn't a reflection of the rest of kaplan's info.

Kaplan loves Demerol, but I know in nursing school and ATI, Demerol is the devil and is rarely given anymore.
I wouldn't stress too much over this one. There were a couple of those types of questions in the Kaplan Qs, and I just had to shake my head and move on.
In actual practice, follow your facility's protocol.

Nah, opioids are classically bad for pancreatitis. Clinically, though, Demerol is being relegated to the dustbin of history...except for pancreatitis in patients for whom it works/has worked in the past. But I wouldn't worry about one question.
