working in the USA

Published

I am a student nurse and have a great desire to work inthe USA when I qualify. Can anyone advise me of what time I have to spend in the UK for the experience before I can apply. Also if anyone knows how about applying once I am qualified and what exams I have to take. Most appreciated.:kiss

Not sure about your first question, but you will need to do your NCLEX exam for every state in the USA and some states require the CGFNS exam too.

All the above may be of interest to you...

Also you may want to look at some nursing agencies too - they may be able to answer your questions too:

hello Krissy

you only need to work in acute setting for about 12- 18mnths .really and truely you can go to the states when u want .u can get all the experience you want over there.you do need to take Nclex ,and cgfns. if you apply to california board of nurses ,and a few other ones, you will not need to take cgfns.study hard and you should pass your exams .i would start, looking into it now If i were you .this way when you finish nursing u can take your exam .this way u would still be in that learning mode.what branch r you in? have a look at nursing times international section ,for contacts. All the best and God Bless

Hi there Krissy

I am new to this board and well I couldnt help noticing your post, about wanting to work in the usa after you qualify, I am in the same boat as you, I am also a student (second year) and do reallly want to work abroad also when qualifying, something I do think I should tell you however, is that apparently we british students doing the adult branch of nursing need to have done 2 weeks worth of placements in pediatrics, psychiatric nursing and another category (which i can't quite remember off the top of my head! lol) to be able to work in the usa, as over there students have a more general training rather than herei think. I found this out when talking to an american agency so I am hoping to ask one of my tutors if there is any way I could do this and have a certificate to show that I have worked these hours ...

Hi, read your post and thought this piece of info might help you. When i was at the nursing times career convention i spoke to a coupl of american recruiters about experienc, They said you need a minimum of 12 months but if i applied as soon as i get my PIN, then by the time the process greencard ect, i will have already gained required experience.

Hope this is helpful.

Hi there gina

I am not tooo sure if a 2 week placement on maternity classify as pediatrics , as maternity tends to deal with neonates and newborns , whereas on peds its older children, I think maternity would be good for obstetrics experience, but don't take my word for it!! :) check with the agency/recruiter that you are thinking of going with to make sure! : )

It is more like two months of didactic and clinical in an approved nursing program in each of the specialty areas to give you the credit that you need to meet the requirements for licensure in the US. Working for "two weeks" on that unit will not qualify. There are a specific number of hours that you must have in peds and maternal nurseif you are an adult nurse in the UK and desire to work in the US. A tutor will not be able to help you with these. You need to have it on the transcript from an approved nursing school that gets submitted to the BON, just work hours do not count.

You need the 12-24 months of experience if going through an agency/recruiter. You can make your own arrangments, but remember that you still need to have your transcript completed to submit to the BON, and you must apply and receive a Visa Screen Certificate. See http://www.CGFNS.org for downloading of the application and handbook. This process alone is taking about six months and then you have to add in the time on the US side for processing at the US Embassy, and then on your side.

If you have any more questions do not hesitate to submit them or send me a PM.

Good luck............... :balloons:

:) Thanks Suzanne4, I do not qualify till July so do u think its ok to start process now?

You cannot apply until you actually have a copy of your transcripts issued. Will you have enough hours, or do you have to take the pediatric and maternal courses to meet the requirements? Those will need to be completed first, also.
