Working while taking RN classes?

Published

I'm going to start taking RN courses soon.

I want to work while taking those classes.

However, because of the class schedule, I cannot get a full time job.

I know that once the clinical and rotations start, it will be hard to work.

But, at least for the first year, I want to work.

I'm thinking about working as a pharmacy technician.

What other jobs should I look into?

Congrats on acceptance. I also start this fall my ADN program. I am a PCT at a hospital on an infant and children's unit. I work 7p-7:30a 2 nights a week. I have my clinicals on Thursday and Fridays 7a-1p. So I have to make sure that I don't work Wed or Thur nights because it puts patients at risk from my exhaustion. But that is a great job, CNA using your 1st semester skills :)

I would ask your program coordinator. At our orientation, they told us if we're in the full-time program there's really no way we can work and have time for reading, studying and clinicals. The part-time program allows you to work up to 20 hours per week. I would definitely ask if you would be able to squeeze in work. They usually advise against it, if you can.

I'm hoping to get a job as a tutor at my school, which is only 5 to 10 hours per week. Not much, but at least it's something :)

I have gone full-time and worked more than full-time throughout the entire program. I will graduate in August, so I have been doing this for two years now. It is not easy, but you can work and do classes.

This is my most important concern as well. I am applying to a bsn program as I am a mom of two and work part time (days) but I won't be able to work my current job when I start school. So I'm looking forward to working as a CNA and still keep a roof over our heads while taking classes during the day. It's tough and I know I can do it, I have a BS in Biology already and I did that full time while working and parenting my first born. Tough but doable. This was very helpful!!!
