Working while in school

heya folks,

Was wondering what others have done over the years for work as they were in their first few years of school for nursing. Right now I'm working in the computer field, completly unrelated of course, and hoping to make the schedule jive with going to school as much as I can... In the back of my mind I've been trying to think of what would be a good entry level job to get one into a hospital/health care enviroment? Like a store room position.. (or PCA?)

I'm working towards and being an RN, and not all that interested in first going the LPN route...

TIA

You wouldn`t need to find a different job necessarily. If your place of business is open longer than 9-5 you might see if you would be able to switch shifts to accommodate your school schedule. That`s what I ended up doing and I got a pay increase too! :) I work 2nd shift 4-midnight and it fits my school schedule just great. Good Luck!

it is good to work as a CNA. But, I think when you do that you increase the possiblities of burn out. I have worked as a waiter, yard work, Home Depot, FedEX, CNA. All of those over a six year spand and with 3 moves to differant states. Also, keep in mind that a CNA is normally low pay and when you are in school the more you get per hour the less you have to work.

I do think it is good to work as a CNA thought

I like working as a PCT cuz I can burn it out in one 12h shift rather than interfere with two nights or weekend days.

I kept my job for insurance and because I did not want the added stress of learning a new job. Plus, I made more money than a CNA. After I got my ADN I worked as an RN while earning my BSN. That was my first hospital job. It helps if your boss is cooperative regarding your schedule.

not to be too ignorant, but what does PCA, and PCT stand for??

I worked weekend as a waitress while undergoing a one year lpn course. most in our class did not work and our teachers advices not to work. It was hard but i would carry flash cards in my apron and study any chance I could. Every night I studied. It was just hard when test fell on mondays. I just set my alarm early. It can be done but you must be motivated. some people have jobs that allow them to study at work. Mine did not. If you really want it you can do it. good luck cj

Patient Care Assistant (or aid) and patient care technician. Both about the same. I am a PCA in Cental NY to get through school.

Have you thought about driving a school bus? Wonderful hours and although the pay is not that great you do get benefits, at least where I live you do.

I do transport (escort) in a hospital. It isn't as helpful for nursing as a nurse's aide would be, but only requires a high school education and pays better than flipping burgers. My hospital is really good about scheduling around nursing school, and there's a fair amount of patient interaction, as well as opportunities to observe and interact with nurses (I mean that in a purely professional way, for the most part).

I work in corporate america and wish so badly that I could work in a hospital setting. I go to school at night (4 nights a week) and work full time during the day. I just can't afford to take the pay cut that would be inevitable if I was to get a job in the healthcare field. So here I sit plugging away until graduation. I am truly blessed though because management here is super flexible, like when I had to get a class in that started at 2pm they let me work extra hours on a different day of the week and leave work at 1pm 2 days a week. I also record my lecutres, download them on my pc and listen to them while I work. It is good study time that I don't think I would have if I was working in a hospital.

Best of luck with your schooling and job decisions.
