Working as an RN in Boston

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Would anyone like to share any experiences they have had working as an RN in or around Boston? Any favorite locations, and why? Also, what do you think is most important when deciding to work somewhere? (other than actually getting the job) Thanks!

What are you looking for? ICU? ER? med surg? Are you a new grad?

Specializes in Pedi.

What are you looking for? I've worked in Boston for my entire career... 4 1/2 years in the hospital and the last (almost) 2 in the community.

I'm a student, just looking for personal experiences at different locations.

BSN or ADN? How far outside of the city will you go?

BSN. And I'm not sure how far I would go. I would like to live somewhere in MA...not sure where..open to reading about any area :)

Specializes in Med/Surg, Rehab.

I've worked in two hospitals, one nursing home and one LTAC hospital in the Boston area. There is a wide gap in terms of pay and benefits among different places. Pre-nursing, best salary and benefits were at a Partners hospital, though I didn't work there as a nurse so I can't speak to the working conditions on the patient units.

I've learned a lot at each of my nursing positions and I'm happy I had each of them to grow and progress through. I think if I had started in a new grad program at an acute care hospital I wouldn't appreciate it as much as I do now (having worked my way up). I think the most important thing is having a supportive manager and coworkers. I didn't have much support in my first nursing job but I made it through and it's made me a better nurse.

The cost to live varies greatly area to area. he north sore is EXPENSIVE but so is Boston. I live NW of the City. Beverly is a nice hospital and so is Emerson they do "big things" for community hospitals. I have never worked Salem. Lowell General and Saints Memorial in Lowell are good as well....Lowell as done massive building and upgrades and is a good place to work. Lahey is OK for a "medical center" outside of Boston proper but is physician heavy. I too have worked and LTACH outside of Boston on the north shore...it's a tough place but great experience.

If you want to live or work in-town, get your foot in with a tech/PCA/CNA/whatever job while you're in school; you're much more likely to get an RN job there when you graduate.

From my exp and what I have heard from friends/coworkers, some of the best in town to work for are MGH, BWH, (brigham) BIDMC (beth israel).

Also good RN/work friendly places: Beverly (north shore), Emerson (concord/lexington), South Shore Hosp, Newton Wellesley, Faulkner, Mt Auburn, Cambridge Hosp (they only hire new employee nurses as BSNs), Winchester Hosp.

Also a solid rep: Melrose Wakefield, North Shore Med. Ctr/Salem, the Spaulding system for rehabs.

Hi there. Just wondering if you know what RNs at MGH/BWH/BIDMC make?
