Work as a CNA after passing the NCLEX?

I currently work as a CNA at my local hospital. Once I pass the NCLEX and get my license but before I find a RN position, can I still continue to work as a CNA? Should I? I can't go any period of time without working once I'm out of school. Ugh.

    As long as you possess CNA certification, you can work as a CNA even though you have an RN license too. I wouldn't recommend doing it for too long however; be aggressive in your job search so that you can take on your new role as an RN as soon as possible. I knew an RN who was so used to doing tech work that it was all she was comfortable with, and she never got a job as a nurse! Wishing you the very best in your career.

    Thank you for your reply. Since I posted this, I've read that it is not true that you can work as a CNA if you are an RN. At least, you take on the responsibilities that an RN has once you are licensed. I am going to as my BON about this! There is much confusion!

    This varies by employer/state. Some employers don't allow people to work below their license because of liability. For example- you are a licensed RN but working as a CNA. Your patient codes or has some other medical emergency that a prudent RN would respond to immediately but, in your CNA role, you are limited in what the employer allows you to do so you get the RN. Something happens because of the delay in getting the RN. The BoN will still hold you to your RN license.
