Will travel for work

Published

I am a senior nursing student. I will graduate in December. I want a job as a GN in January 2010. Based on research and reading posts on here it sounds nearly impossible. I know a bunch of GN's who are working as aides!! I can't believe it. And I don't want to graduate and lose my nursing skills. So, I live in MI which has the highest unemployment rate in the US and the hospitals have a hiring freeze. I am willing to move to any city in any state that is hiring. I just need to know where they are hiring. Then in January I will be there and I will work. Please help me figure out where to go.

Specializes in NICU.

I am a new grad and just moved to Texas for a job. If you are willing to learn to love the heat...look into jobs in the big cities or even the smaller ones. There are a lot of new grad internship programs that begin in January. Good Luck :D

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I am an LPN/LVN who lives in Texas and attends an RN program in Oklahoma City. There are nursing jobs in both states, but the pay is probably a lot lower than what you'd receive up north.

Oklahoma City is actively hiring for RNs, but the starting pay for a new RN is a whopping $18.44 to $18.93 per hour.

Most Dallas-area hospitals start new RNs off at an average of $23 per hour.

i think you can only make a determination on this based on your own personal experience. i.e. when the time comes you have to fill out your own apps and see what response you get. it can't just be about what you read or what you heard because everyone's experience is different. if you read a cross section of posts on this board you would have noticed that some people are having a hard time but other gn's are getting jobs - so don't assume the worst for yourself. the job market in my area is slow but then again it was never a hot market anyway. however i am good friends with a couple ppl who just graduated from nursing school and some of them have jobs now and some are still looking but at least they are getting bites.

You cannot compare MD with TX or OK. The cost of living is much lower here. You can get a brand new house here in the $120,000 range, or rent a 2-bedroom for $500 to $600 per month. There's no comparison.

By the way, I am an LPN/LVN with 3 years of experience and earn $25 hourly in a nursing home setting.

Thank you for the response. As far as basing this on other people's experiences, I am and I'm not. I have done many of my own job searches, talked to people at the hospital I currently work at and seen struggles of my friends. I am still going to apply in my current area, but I want to have an idea of where else I could possibly go because moving out of state is a big deal. So I'd like time to research the area and whatnot. I really appreciate the feedback. Keep it coming if you have more! :)
