I am hearing that hospitals are hiring like crazy and not because of it being "season" soon. Anyone know why?

Hiring practices for nurses would most definitely be regional, not on a national scale or anything of that sort. I am in a large metro area of 7 million people with 100+ hospitals, and none of the facilities around here are hiring 'like crazy.'
Actually, there's a local glut of unemployed and underemployed nurses around here. Your mileage obviously varies. :)

My hospital has been doing a lot of hiring lately -- because for the last 2 years, we have done very little as we had been trying to save money. Surprise, surprise! Staff got tired of working short and started resigning to go to where the grass looked greener ... and hiring travelers is expensive ... and it has finally been recognized that we don't have enough staff nurses! So now they are hiring again.

I'm not sure what "the season" is for hiring. There are two hospitals in the area that are hiring in high number at the moment, but others aren't. I think it depends on the needs of the facility. (One of them just finished a large remodel project and I think now has more space, hence the need for more employees).
Even with these two hiring though it still seems like a lot of new and inexperienced nurses can't find work and that the market overall is in a glut.

Affordable Care Act has a bit to do with it as well. We have hired tones of nurses in the past six months 'cause we needed them.
