I thought I would look at this forum as I'm thinking about going into the field of nursing. I'm on my third year of a master's of divinity and am serving in a church. For along time, I saw myself going into ministry to be a pastor, but I am heavily questioning that. Most of my days are stuck in an office planning and typing out programs. I don't feel that I am doing any good. I really enjoy interacting with people which I thought I would do a lot more of. I want to help people more. I worked in a hospital while in a college as a patient transportation aide and care provider. I'm looking at an accelerated bsn program.
What are some of the reasons you all have gone into nursing? Any answers are much appreciated.

I love the knowledge of human biology & the combination of technology and medication being compassionately applied to those in need.

As a Christian, reading your post, my first thought was that you should finish the divinity program since you're in your third year - and then maybe pursue some kind of medical training (Nursing, EMT, Paramedic, etc). Maybe God is preparing you for mission work! You said you feel stuck in the office, and you want to help people. Medical Missionaries have the opportunity to reach people when they need it the most. You could share the love of Christ - helping them medically and spiritually.
And maybe God is calling you to work in a hospital, and be salt & light to your patients there. Pray about it, and seek advice of some godly people whatever you do. Whatever dream God has put in your heart, he will be faithful to complete it.
Good Luck & God Bless!:balloons:

I like nursing because it is such an exciting job requiring lots of super human powers and patience (and persistence too). :-))

I love nursing because of the satsifaction I get from helping others. Even the demanding patients I try to make a negative into a positive with them. God is all powerful and maybe you are being called to service.

] The satisfaction of making the difference in my pt and families lives. Being able to share my knowledge and experience of medicine with the people who need it. I will be starting in public health yea a week from today 11/19 and I can't wait. I will be working with maternity and young mom's and I hope to make a difference in this area.

You could always finish your program and become a hospital Chaplain or Pastoral Counselor. :)

I absolutely adore the human body and all it's potential for dysfunction and how to get it right again.
There is something in every pt I love. The diverse personalities interest me. I love getting the ornery German woman who think you can be back in 2 minutes when she is ready. Or the looney daughter who wants her DNR, unresponsive father (comfort measures only) to have another CT done to show he is getting better. While she paces the floor reading the drug book about all the medications the docs could give to save him.
Most of the nurses vent about the pain in the orifice pt. I accept them happily. If they are that mean I do my job and get out. However I can usually get the good side out of most pt's. Makes my day better and I walk away feeling like I may have done something to improve their life besides the physical care I have given.

at first i took up nursing because i find the human body to be fascinating... but when my nursing subjects started i found out that nursing is beyond the the physical body... nursing involves the whole being of a person which is more fascinating for me...
i also love nursing because every duty day is never the same... every day is exciting...

I love taking care of all of my patients... even the demanding ones and the ones that love to punch and kick.... It wasn't until I started Nursing School that I feel that I've finally found my niche.
I have thought greatly about going into Chaplaincy or Pastoral counseling. I enjoyed the clinical pastoral education(CPE) I received when I was in Jefferson Hospital in Philly. Unfortunately, it would be sometime down the road until I could work like that. I currently work in a congregation, and I absolutely hate it. To say it simply, this is not the lifestyle that I want for my wife and future children. We have meetings to discuss things, but overall I don't feel that I am doing anything(I'm sitting in my office right now reading this forum while the senior pastor went home to read a book).
The hole goes deeper as I am an Army Chaplain Candidate and can not waive my contract to the Army, but am looking into be transferred to the Nurse Corps. I want my Army and civilian career to be very similar. I have no complaints with God. I'm hard working and want to work hard.
I appreciate all your comments and help.
