Which organization to join?

Published

I'm interested in joining a nursing organization but have no idea which one to join (just look at how many are in this link) http://www.nurse.org/orgs.shtml I'm currently working on a medical cardiology unit and I'm going to school for NP (primary care). Which ones are of the best or top organizations to join?

Specializes in ER, ICU.

I advocate joining your state nursing association which I think is almost always tied to the ANA. Meaning you can pay a little more than your state association and also join the national. Those organizations I think are the most organized and are working for all nurses. I am a member of the ENA because I work in the ER and I think they do a great job.

Specializes in FNP.

My friend OCN will freak out one me, lol, but I love the ANA. You can also join the AANP as a student.

Specializes in Hospital Education Coordinator.

ANA - you can join direct and not be involved in state chapter (if you have one). But if you have one you will learn what your state's legislature is doing that involves nursing. I also recommend one that pertains specifically to your area of practice, like AACN. Remember, it is not membership for life, so you can drop it later if needed.

Specializes in Critical Care, Education.

Agree with ANA & State NA. This is where the 'action is' -- including organized lobbying efforts for nurse-friendly legislation. I have my dues set up with a monthly electronic transfer, so it's not painful at all. In addition, I would suggest joining your primary specialty organization to stay current on Evidence-based practice & new developments. BTW, all professional dues are still deductible on your Fed taxes, right?

Specializes in Medical/Telemetry. Now ICU.

I joined AACN- not sure if you are a critical care nurse...that site is good and you get 2 different critical care journals and free CEus and stuff :)

AACN is the best! Tons of ceu's and free journals. I always felt the ANA charged to much and personally think the AACN handals policitcal agendas better than the ANA!
