I am an excelsior graduate and I have been an RN for six years. I love my job and damn good at it too. I recently started travel nursing and I am upset that I can't work in California. It's not fair and their has to be something that I can do. I am writing up a mission statement and I going to send it to everyone that matters. Does anyone feel my pain on this matter and want to help?

I would love for the discrimination to end. I understand requiring so much time working as a nurse or additional time as a precepted student but to say never is crazy. There are many potential nurses in the US who cannot attend traditional school, but instead of working together to find a solution many hospitals look to the Philippines to hire nurses. (I'm not saying they aren't good nurses, I'm just saying that we need to develop human resources already in the US before importing labor.)

I don't think that word is applicable in this situation. Each state has the right to set the requirements for licensure; CA has determined that Excelsior grads do not meet the requirements. As Excelsior grads are not a protected class, there is no discrimination. Please don't use words when not appropriate- it waters down the true meaning.

This has been a known issue since 2003, and is not likely to change. EC's model does not meet California's requirement of clinicals concurrent with theory. EC has pursued this issue to the fullest, but without success. It is not likely to change unless California ever changes its standard (not likely).
Yes, Crusty Rose, I did misuse the word discrimination. I do apologize for that but I still think that not looking at the entire candidate is a mistake in any employment situation. We all have stories: I know one nurse who did traditional school and is licensed, but I wouldn't trust him with my dog. I know an Excelsior grad who is one of the best nurses I have ever known. As I stated before I tried the traditional school route but I couldn't make it work and stay employed. (And without employment I couldn't pay for it---a catch 22 for sure.)
I would like there to be a way to fulfill some of these requirements after the fact to meet state standards. It would be nice if there were a way, but I don't plan to ever move to Cali, so I guess that for me it is a moot point.

Has anyone tried to replace their Excelsior ADN with a traditional brick and mortar ADN after the fact just to meet California's requirement? I know I may sound crazy but does this make sense?
Funny you should mention that! I was thinking the exact same thing, why not. Although can you imagine the entrance interview?
