When should you start applying?

Published

I am a nursing student - graduating this spring. I have applied for a couple graduate nurse residency programs but I want to know when I should start applying for actual hospital jobs. I have heard everything from: Not until you've graduate, to not until you get your licenses to "are you serious? You haven't started applying yet?!"

I am moving states from Indiana to Texas - So I cannot just walk into a hospital and talk to HR :)

I started applying in NY once i received my license. Many places will not even consider you without you having a license (on the app you would write your license number). Also in terms of walking in to HR...depends where u live. HR departments in big cities have so many applicants that the staff will just roll their eyes at you and tell u "You are supposed to apply online". In small towns and non-hospital settings such as nursing homes, you may be allowed to apply in person.

For new grad programs that require you to apply several months in advance, apply about 2-3 months before graduation to jobs that say "license required by XYZ day" or that specifically ask for new grads who graduate in your time frame of graduation. Most other places will not consider you until you are licensed, generally because they need people who are ready to start working at any time.

You apply when the hospital wants you to apply. Each hospital is different -- and will have its own preferences. Ask the hospital recruiter what their preferred timetable is. Do what THEY want you to do: don't base your decision on anything else.

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

it doesn't hurt to start applying now. I had an offer where I precepted before I graduated and an interview in psych the week of graduation. Put your feelers out now, brush up that resume, and start applying. Research new grad programs in Texas, and find out their requirements and deadlines.

you should apply ASAP
