Will there be any medical transcriptionists in the years to come? I know most doctor offices around here are using EMR now. But I hear that regardless of that, some docs still dictate reports and letters and H & Ps. I was thinking of taking a medical transcription classes online and working from home.

I am burned out to the max from 19 years of ICU nursing. I could care less about the $.. Its not worth it. ICU has killed my body my health is going down the drain now.:(

Should I do this?

just out of curiosity--if you dont care about the money why even stay in the field at all?? I dont know what medical transcriptionist make--Iam assuming ALOT less than a nurse...so why dont you do something you would totally love? I always said if I didnt need the money, I would work in a flower shop. or a photography shop.

I don't need much $, we've always lived really simple and never borrowed any money except for our home. We owe $40,000 on it. So I need or HAVE to make at least enough to get the dumb thing paid off. If we could sell it we would but we live on my family's farm. so that's not an option.

Really the only career I'm interested in is working from home. It seems like my personality has done a 180. I just don't like people! I'm sooooo soooo happy just working here by myself and being with my family. Anything I can do from home, I want to do it! I checked into triage nursing and can't find a thing.

I have been doing and eBay/Amazon business for 3 years and LOVE it! I sell camping, hiking, and biking stuff. But I know in my heart of hearts its not gonna do well this next year. People aren't buying retail. So I'll keep it going. But I am going to tell my ICU manager that I can no longer do PRN. Its too much for me.

I just don't want to deal with people. I am so happy and energized when I can have days away from everyone, its invigorating and rejeuvenating and fabulous. Some get depressed, but I just love it so much. I live in a beautiful area and my Mr. Wonderful built a gorgeous home in a heavily wooded area with delightful birds and trees and its just a realy beauty!

I crave solitude! So happy here with just me and my family.

I call tell you that I had a medical transcribing business 20 years ago which I conducted from home and that I loved it! I did this while raising my two girls. I must say, however, that it took about a year to a year and a half to start up and that was when the economy was good. I'm not in touch with how the current market is for medical transcriptionists, but you might google the national association of medical transcriptionists and do a little research into it before signing up for a course. If you have your heart set on working at home, this might be a viable option. Twenty years ago I had a splendid business going which kept my little family alive during tough times!

My doc has a voice recognition program. His wife does the transcription from his small hand held "tape" recorder....I know theyre all digital but what do you call them?

my son's girlfriend has done this for several years but it is not like it use to be

she was let go at a hospital because it was reducing the amout of people who were needed...

the free lance people are not doing well so she went to work in a more regulated place.

there are different fields where working from home is wide open but i don't think that medical transcribing is going to grow any

EMRs are like this--some still use straight transcription, but there is somewhat of a shift to voice recognition. Believe me, there is still a need for MTs. Technology hasn't caught up too much! There is no shortage of jobs. You just have to be picky and understand that you are paid on production. I get paid just as much as I did nursing and often more, but I live in a state with cruddy wages for nurses. I am a current transcriptionist. If you have any questions, let me know!

Any ideas out there about work from home careers that I can do with 19 years of experience as a nurse? Or that don't even involve nursing? Right now I just really want to be home, I know that regardless of if its at home or away from home, its still work. I just want to be home.
