Slight problem. I recently applied to nursing school. Unfortunately I owe money to a college so they won't release my transcripts(official or unofficial) Now the nursing school wants to hold my application until I pay the balance.(that could take a year at least; it's 1800 dollars that I don't have right now) I wanted to apply now for Sept 08 and have my bill paid off by that time..But they want to see my grades now...What should I do? I'm in tears and I'm at work!

Unfortunately, I don't see any other option but to pay off the old bill. They have a right to withhold your transcript, and the new school is most definitely going to want to see it. Can you borrow the money from family or friends?

I would go to every place I possibly could and apply for an emergency student loan and pay off that balance.
Do you have a credit card that you can float it on until you can get a student loan approved? I would do everything I could to make that happen.

I agree..you have to find a way to pay that debt. Is there anyone you can talk to at school who might have alternative solutions? Also, would the new school be willing to take an unofficial transcript until you get it sorted out?
Unfortunately I have bad credit(yes I've learned my lesson and am trying to fix my credit as we "speak") So a loan is out of the question as are credit cards. I don't have much family left except my parents who don't really have that kind of money to spare.
My old college does not do unofficial transcripts. I've tried that. The nursing school I applied to said they would look at unofficial transcripts but I have no way of obtaining those. I did however fax her my degree audit which is the only thing I have showing grades and credits. Hopefully that will be good enough until I can pay off the bill.

You don't know until you apply for a loan...the parameters for student loans are totally different than what they are for other types of loans. You aren't the only student that has bad credit, and loans are given out all the time.
I would go ahead and at least try, b/c it doesn't look like there is a Plan B

They do have student loans for those w/ bad credit. My husband works for a student loan company. If you want, I can ask him for some information and pass it along to you.

Can you contact the old school's business office and try to arrange a payment plan that will pay down the $1800 over time? Perhaps if you can set up something like that they will allow you to obtain your transcripts (at least unofficial copies).
Good luck.
The school is not being flexible at all. I've called them and talked about payment plans and their response was we don't do that. I asked about unofficial transcripts and their response was we don't do those unless your bill is paid. I would like to know more about student loans though.. I'm bummed out because I really wanted this...

I lost a semester due to my trancript not being released in time for
$10 I didn't know I owed until it was too late. They can be as strict as they want to be, unfortunately.
