I was calling around today to find out about some shadowing opportunities and when I called the major hospital we have, I asked their nursing department if they had nephrology nurses. She asked to repeat what type of nurse, so I did and she laughed at me and gave me a resounding NO. I know they do transplants, dialysis and so on...did I have the name wrong? I have been reading about nephrology nurses all over the place and was very interested in it.
Thanks!

You got it right, did you pronounce it right?
She was pretty rude, try getting the nurse manager's name on the unit they do dialysis, and she may be more helpful.

Sometimes they're referred to as dialysis nurses. People who don't know what the "techincal term" is usually use that name for them.

I'm a dialysis patient, and I've always heard them called dialysis nurses. Regardless of what they're called, that was rude of the nurse to laugh. (Anyway, who'd want to work with THAT witch?)

People answering the phone in the nursing department didn't know what nephrology nurses are? Scary thought -- hopefully it wasn't a nurse that gave you the answer "no." Don't give it a second thought that she laughed at you -- continue to advocate for yourself, your shadowing experience, and your nursing career. Asking to shadow a nurse that specializes in nephrology was not a far-reaching request. If you are interested in this speciality, ask if they have a dialysis unit or transplant floor. Good luck

The person answering the phone was probably NOT a nurse! Some clerk, possibly even a temp or newbie. Give it another shot (no pun intended), let us know how you do. Good Luck!
Thanks so much to all of you! I am going to keep plugging along until I get my opportunity!!! Thanks for the advice, I will take all of it!

Ouch, some people are flat out rude. I doubt she was a nurse, probably the unit secretary.
