What is CCRN? How do I go about it?

Specializes in Nurse Anesthetist.

Critical Care Registered Nurse. Certification involves an exam in either Adult, cardiac or Pediatric nrusing. Might also be one for NICU, but I'm not sure. If you work in a ICU, the manager will have resources for classes to prep for exam. About 250-$300, but Its been awhile, so I don't remember the $. Some units/hospitals will pay more for a nurse who is certified. But in this job market, maybe not. If you are a warm body with a RN you are hired. BUT, later, when the shortage isn;t so acute, it may be good. A lot of CRNA school look at this and like to see your extra certs. They also look at extra committees and leadership you have done ACTIVELY.

Thanks for the info. Didnt i read you are now in a CRNA program?

I had wanted to write my CCRN for a year or so, but amde sure I had written it and received my score before applying for CRNA school.

CCRN does not stand for Critical Care Registered Nurse. I'm not sure what it exactly stands for but that's what their site says. You can look at the american association of critical care nursing webstie and they have a bunch of information on it.

Oops. Common misconception. The CCRN doesn't "stand" for critical care nurse certification, as the web site says. But, when you go to the site, it actually never says what the actual letters stand for. In "essence" it MEANS you have passed the critical care exam. Best explanation is to visit the site above.

Thanks ?

CCRN does not stand for critical care registered nurse. please see the aacn website for detailed information pertaining to the ccrn certification. ccrn stands for certified critical care registered nurse. to say that you are a critical care registered nurse implies that you have been " registered" as a critical care nurse. this is not true. you have been " certified" as a critical care nure. there is a huge difference. please see the aacn website for details.

CCRN actually stands for Certification in Critical Care Nursing.

Specializes in CVPACU, CCU, ICU.

Yes something strange happened a few years back and they suddenly decided it didnt stand for Critical Care Registered Nurse - however that is exactly what it stood for when I originally took the exam many moons ago:D I still have my original certification display that states Critical Care Registered Nurse.

Now I see you have to take a test, but do u need a certain amount of years under your belt?

Certified critical care nurses (ccrn) must have been in critical care practice for a minimum of two years to be eligible for the examination.

CCRN exam

This exam is for nurses who care directly for acutely or critically ill patients at the bedside. CCRNs can be found in areas such as the icu, ccu, emergency department, trauma unit, interventional radiology/cardiology and critical care transport/flight services.

Basic information

CCRN® is a registered service mark of the aacn certification corporation and denotes certification in critical care nursing as granted by the aacn certification corporation. Registered nurses who have not achieved ccrn certification status or whose ccrn status has lapsed are not authorized to use the ccrn credential. Although a common misconception, the letters ccrn do not stand for "critical care registered nurse." to use the credential in such a way suggests that nurses are registered as critical care nurses, when in fact that is not true. registration is a legal matter between a nurse and the state in which he or she practices. For a definition of certification, as opposed to registration, click here.

The ccrn examination is a 3-hour test consisting of 150 multiple-choice items. Each ccrn examination, whether focused on the care of the neonatal, pediatric or adult critically ill patient, is based on a role delineation / ccrn validation study.
