What do you carry in your pockets?

I read a similar thread in another forum. (First year nursing)

Just wanted to see what OR nurses are carrying in their pockets to get you through the case or day.

Not much! The hospital supplied scrubs have a butt pocket which is pretty much useless-- I keep the day's schedule folded up in there, but that's about it. My chest pocket holds a pen, my glasses when I'm not wearing them, and I usually slip my ID card in there so it doesn't dangle into a sterile field..

This brings up a related question: does anyone wear an extra belt pouch or something similar to hold stuff? I'd like to carry scissors, tape, alcohol wipes etc. My PDA would be fabulous. Is this type of thing acceptable?

2 black pens

scissors

my handy dandy notebook

a piece of paper to scribble notes onto

That's all I need to get me through the day:)

Daily schedule, preference card for the case were doing and scissors. Phone in cell phone pocket. This is a hospital phone that only works in the vacinity of the OR, but it works like a regular phone.

I also carry 2 pins, 'cause I am always laying one down or the Dr. may walk off with it. And a index card with phone numbers.

I carry a couple of pens, marker, scissors, and of course my surgicel! My preceptor gave it to me as a "gift" my first day on the job and I'm never with out a piece.

back pocket: mini trauma shears

waistline: pen and ID badge

That's it..........;)

Scissors, tape, 2 pens, notepad = (the piece of cardboard you get when tying the scrubs gown), and dermabond!

If I am not in charge then I carry pens and my calender which has numbers in it through out the hospital..If I am in charge then I carry the keys and the phone

black pen, scissor, tape, glasses, notebook mints

I had a special "circulating apron" made so now I can carry everything! I have a couple of 'holster' for pens & scissors and shallow pouches for things like tape and wipes. I don't know if this will ever catch on but I still love mine and mainly use it when circulating ortho cases since our ortho guys love their tape and there are more times to have to remember to write down like touniquet start/stop, screw #s etc....

Hey TallBlondie-- could you post pics of that OR apron? I've been thinking of having something like that made, but it can't look too gay... we guys have enough stereotype to overcome!;) Maybe I could get a Sears carpenter's tool belt to carry my OR goodies, like Tim the toolman :lol2:

hey paul check out www.smartscrubs.com

they have a thing called a "scrub poc." it's fabric with extra little spots for pens, scissors, "stationary - cardboard), whatever else you can fit in there. it's adjustable for around the waist, almost like a fanny pack, but nowhere near as horrifying. you can pick different patterns. mine is black. i cut the strings off & carry that in the pocket of my jacket.

as far as what i carry.. clickie fine point pens for me, a few extra for the docs if they need it, scissors, hemostats, a roll of tape, fancy hospital issue stationary in the form of cardboard from the gowns (always good to recycle), & my little notebook with important ph #'s & other misc tidbits. ohhh, can't forget the alchohol wipes : )

I carry a pen, some paper clips to keep records together, my ID badge hands from my neck that clips to by scrub top neck V- attached to a lanyard. On my right side is my pager, Then I have 2 disposable kelly clamps, a pair of bandage scissors, a small roll of one inch plastic tape that fits on a large rep supplied safety pin. AND----my rings ALWAYS stay in my locker while I am at work....... Too many stories of lost rings by fellow co-workers. I also carry the phone when I am in charge..................(for whatever the dollar charge pay is worth).......................
