We had our first med-surg clinical on Monday. About 2 hours after we started the hospital was put on lock down! We were all stuck up on the 7th floor for hours, no one in, no one out. Some guys robbed a pawn shop and thought it would be an excellent idea to hide in the hospital. We had to wait until the SWAT team cleared every room/closet/hiding spot on every floor before we were released!

Wow, that sounds kinda scary, but exciting too. Were you still able to do your clinical activities or did they restrict the floors to only essential personnel?
Last semester during my OB rotation there was a woman trying to pass herself off as a doctor, presumably with the intent to take a baby. She had on the blue scrubs like all the L&D docs wear, and somehow she had gotten a doctor's full access ID card that let her into all the locked units and the rooms within them like the OR and the nurseries. She was spotted in peds, L&D and mother-baby. Someone finally noticed her because she was wearing heels and it just stood out as fishy. So they had a code, but the stairs didn't lock in time and she escaped (but without a baby). They found the scrubs in the parking lot (she changed her clothes) and as far as I know they never caught her. The next day they had mock code but of course we were all like OMG she's back! Interestingly, there was no mention of this incident in the papers, police blotters, county website etc.
Scary! I'm glad she didn't get a baby!
It was exciting, but nerve wracking too. We don't know who belongs, KWIM? So we were suspicious of everyone! We were able to do our clinical stuff, as it happened after we already got on the floor. It didn't actually get scary until the SWAT had their guns pointed on us! I understand they have to do their jobs, just don't like big guns pointed at me:bugeyes:

Sounds like good place to me!
I'd hit the morgue and play dead for awhile.
Ha, that's what i said to my teacher*L* Only weird thing was the pawn shop they robbed was miles away!
The patients were surprisingly calm!

That's exciting and scary all at the same time! What an experience for a first day!
