VRE and MRSA

we isolate them totally; gowns,gloves, masks, the whole deal; we don't bleach between them, but the room is crashed between them; even if its VRE to the next VRE pt. as they can be in varying degrees of getting better. Maybe this is different as I work in a hospital. The clinics around us don't have isolation rooms so if any of their pts get something infectious then they have to come back to their home base till they are clear of any infections. [

On our dialysis unit there are 4 "glass wall" rooms for isolation pts.

At the unit I'm currently at we follow universal precautions... With the addage of a disposable cuff that the patient does take home and return with each tx. We don't disinfect the machines after these cases-- the bacterium are too large to pass through the fibers of the dialyizer negating any need for disinfection of the machine.

Confusing at best. I have informed the staff that were not aware of the situation. None are isolated. No disposable cuffs. The cuffs are supposed to be cleaned b/t pt's with 1:10 bleach solution.

I agree with you to some extent, but as I have found, it's better to error on the side of caution with this issue. As much as I would like to say that all cuffs are cleaned b/t pts, I know they are often overlooked during a busy turn around.

I was mortified to read you don't disinfect after these clients. At my workplace we heat disinfect every machiine after every client regardless of infection risk!

Every time? How long do you have between patients? We don't disinfect between patients...just at night and in special circumstances. Only thing we do is clean the exterior of the machine, the chair, the tv & the BP cuff/cord with bleach.

We have two shifts for dialsyis clients, and any acute ones we need to sneak inbetween. First lot of outpaitents start at 0830 and second shift 1430. No nights (thank goodness!)

Oh, ok. I see now. At our unit, we have up to four shifts/day...first starting at around 5:30-6am, last one starting around 4-4:30pm.
