The National Nurse Alliance of SEIU kicked off the campaign yesterday nationwide.
The purpose being to unite nurses both union and nonunion to help resolve the patient care crisis in the US and to address issues such as poor staffing, forced overtime, salary manipulation by employers. I'm in St. Louis working with the local Alliance nurses on these and other issues. There's an initial 6 million dollars and a lot of legal and political power nationwide to draw on, to make this a dynamic and vital campaign that will yield real results and benefits for both patients and nurses. Feel free to drop me an email if you want to know more.

It all makes sense, right? Overworked, underpaid, stretched too thin between too many patients than what is safe to care for results in nurses leaving the bedside, aka: voting with their feet. Yet, amazingly, hospital administrators are refusing to acknowledge any of all these factors as well as allow us to participate in the discussions leading to the solutions.
Now throughout the country, nurses have the opportunity to come together and work towards solving these problems by joining the Value CareValueNurses campaign. :balloons:

I just pledged online. I also read an article that said less than 50% of nurses nationwide are NOT working at the bedside. i know why.

Value Care Value Nurse is the best thing that can happen fo nurses. Nurses united all over can make so many improvements in standards of care for patients, as well as improving working conditions. Working together does work! We have seen it. I have pledged to become a Value Care Value Nurse.
There is no nurse shortage but a NURSE CRISIS. There are too many nurses in other lines of work, where they have an 8 hour work day, good pay and are treated with respect and dignity. We need to get the administrators to recognize nurses are well educated, and knowledgeable. This I believe can be accomplished through uniting together in Value Care Value Nurse.

I don't want an 8 hour day.
I didn.t mean all nurses should have an 8 hour day. Some nurses do want the 8 hour day. That is why they leave the bedside of the patient. The way hospitals schedule now many nurses not only work 12hour shifts but then are mandated to work another 4 to 8 hour shift. Studies have shown that by 12 hours a nurses sense of judgement is not that accurate. This is when errors occur The mandated overtime disrupts the family home life. School programs, conferences, and etc. are missed. It also, effects their married life.

I would not trust SEIU with any of my money! They are not a good union. They represent too many other fields to be of use to nurses. SEIU called a strike at Seton Hospital a while ago. It lasted for 6 weeks but no one on the picket lines got paid at all. Over a million dollars set aside for strikers had just disappeared! A poor union may be better than no union but nurses should choose a union that only represents nurses.

I am confused about your statement re: SEIU not being a good union b/c they represent too many other fields, etc.
I am a Registered Nurse represented by SEIU and have experience as a bargaining team member and steward. It is us, the members who make up the union, that bargain the contract and settle the grievances. We, the members, make up the Executive Board with our delegates elected from the rank and file. How can that system not address nurses' issues?
A union is only as strong as it's members and with 84,000 rns across the nation -- I'm with Nurse Alliance. -- democracy rules.
any way I think it's time to hold the entire healthcare industry accountable to our vision of how care should be delivered. WE NEED TO WORK TOGETHER to do that. The entire healthcare team and all RNs. They want us to divide so they conquer. im sure the industry loves to see us squabble agmonst ourselves -- then we see them pocketing billions while our patients suffer.

SEIU can't 'call a strike'. Only the members in that chapter can make that decision. I have been an SEIU member for about 15 years and they have been a great help to us. I have never regreted our desision to affiliate with SEIU. As far as I can tell from this website there is no perfect union just as there is no perfect anything in life. Overall I think nuses in a union have a more power to affect positive change for their patients and themselves. It is up to the nurses to decide which union can best help them. For me it has been SEIU.
