UTT RN-MSN Online Program

Hi Broom,

I don't have any info for you about UTT, but I wanted to say hi, and that if you find anything out, to let me know!! I plan on going there when I finish the ADN program at TJC. I have a friend who is there, but she is going for her BSN. She says it is tough, and fast paced, but again, that is for her BSN. I do know from checking out the website that most of the program is online. I believe just the clinicals are all you have to actually leave your house for! Good luck~

I looked into the UT Tyler program and it is thru TT I believe so I decided to just go thru TT instead plus TT has less pre req's. If you find out anything else I would like to know as well. It will be 1 more year of pre req's for me before I decide to pursure my MSN.

Yes, I do know that the final diploma comes from TT, as they partner with UTT. Since I live in Tyler, I just figured that I would go on thru that route. So are the pre reqs really that big of a difference? Do you know if it is any easier getting into TT? Not that I know how easy UTT is, but I figure it is kind of tough since it is the biggest around here.

yes, you can go the rn-bsn route or rn to msn, which is what i really want to do, to become a nurse practitioner.they partner with tt in the msn-np course, and it is totally online. you can either go full time or part time. here is the info that ut tyler has about the rn-bsn/msn and msn-np track:

in addition to the regular generic track, the mobility in nursing education (mine) track for registered nurses provides the registered nurse the option to complete the bsn, or continue through to the msn. this track admits approximately 35 each semester. our rn-bsn/msn track is a totally web-based offering. once admitted the rn can complete the degree requirements in 12 months of full time study. the con realizes the commitments for the registered nurse so part-time study is an option. the flexibility of this track has attracted applicants from across the state of texas and across the country.

the msn-np degree options are the result of a partnership between the university of texas at tyler, the university of texas health center at tyler and texas tech university health sciences center in lubbock. students pursue careers as np’s with specialties in acute care, pediatric, geriatric, and family. foundation courses are taken at the tyler site. clinical courses for the degree are offered at both the tyler and lubbock sites, with practicum assignments and preceptors throughout the east texas area. the degree is awarded by texas tech university health sciences center through the college of nursing in lubbock, texas. the purpose of this option is to produce a nursing leader who is prepared with specific functional abilities to practice with a specified patient/client population. the msn-np option can also be pursued as a post-master’s certification track.

I'm not sure what all the pre req's for UTT program was but I remember looking at thier site and there was a few more classes for UTT than for TT thats why I choose TT instead. You need 55 credits for TT.

I am in the process of graduating with a BSN on Friday from UTT. The BSN was extremely hard and challenging. The professors were great!! I believe if you are attempting to obtain an MSN -- that degree plan is completed thru UTT, but the NP portion is completed through TT. I think you would be satisfied in earning a Masters from UTT.

I think UTT is trying to start their own NP program instead of going thru TT or UTA. I don't know when they will have that set, but that will be really nice. I'm in the MSN- ADMIN prgram now, and its challenging , but not worse than the BSN program.

How competitive is it to get into UTT? Of course I am several years away since I will just begin classes for an ADN in August, but I am already trying to think ahead!!

I started directly into the BSN program in '04. Depending on the campus determines how competitive admission will be. I was on one of the distance campuses, so there was not alot of competition, but in Tyler , they have several hundred applicants, and only ~100 get in. Cardinal could probably explain more about how competitive the Tyler campus applicants are. I went to the Palestine campus.Hope this helps!

I started nursing school at Lamar in Beaumont, TX and transferred to UTT in Fall 2005. I had a 4.0 GPA in all my science courses, so I can only speak for myself as to what type of GPA it takes to get in. mjbsn is right -- the Tyler campus takes approx. 100 students each semester, unlike the 40 to 50 or so other colleges take. Like I said the BSN cirriculum is challenging, but it is a great program and partners with several good hospitals in the area for clinicals. As far as the NP program-- we had a professor speak in our Community class a couple of weeks ago about the NP program and she never made mention that UTT is trying to start their own program, however, I do recall her saying that the NP portion of the masters program is concluded thru TT. Might want to check with UTT regarding that -- maybe that is fixing to change!!
