UPDATE on "son got wrong vaccination"

Thanks for everyone's support/advice. It's been a busy week, I just got off of 4 in a row (on nights).

I wrote up a letter explaining the facts and what I would like to see happen and a follow up with the MD.

One of the NP from the office called and spoke to me. She said that an incident report was submitted and I would be sent a copy (haven't yet). And this would be adressed, blah, blah, blah. She went on and on explaining about the Hep A side effects, that it's going to be required and so on. Which totally isnt the point. It was a med error and that really needs to be the focus. I haven't heard anything since last tuesday. The NP appologized on behalf of the office. I still don't feel like they see it as anything serious. I've decided to take my kids elsewhere.

If I don't here from the doctor within a few days, I will try again. I just want to make sure that this is addressed. After all, it was a med error! I'm not out looking to sue anyone. But this should be treated seriuosly.

Kinda makes me wonder what their actions would have been if an adverse reaction had occured. I'm getting the impression that because there wasn't any adverse reaction (this time), that it's no big deal to them.

I think you did the right thing by pursuing your concerns with the office. I'm sorry, but not surprised that they didn't seem to take your concerns seriously, or respond in the manner which you had requested.

It never ceases to amaze me the attitude that some healthcare practitioners take when faced with an obvious error on their part. I suspect that you would have been reasonably satisfied to know that your child was not harmed and that actions were being taken within the office to prevent this error in the future. That probably would have been the end of it. Period.

By refusing you the small satisfaction of knowing that they take the error seriously, they are placing themselves in a dangerous position. You will leave their practice dissatisfied, and share your dissatisfaction with anyone who will listen, costing them money and reputation. You may pursue action with the state BON and/or BOM, costing them even more money, reputation, and time. You can also pursue action with your insurance carrier, possibly costing them a contract with that insurer in the future. A lawsuit would probably not be successful, given that your son was not apparently injured, but I would understand the desire to file one for nuisance purposes, if no other. A whole lot of trouble for a medical practice that could have been avoided simply by treating your concerns respectfully.

Thanks for the update. I agree, it's a med error and attitude needs to be addressed.
