UNLV Nursing Program

I've known some students transferred to NSC from UNLV hoping for an easier/more manageable curriculum and that's exactly what they're receiving over there. I have checked out Nevada State's nursing program and have found that theirs is modeled after that of UNR, which is neither better nor worse than that of UNLV, but it just basically boils down to personal preference and learning style. I personally chose to attend UNLV for reasons revolving around technological resources, campus conveniences, on top of accreditation, all of which NSC lacks.

I am also attending UNLV, and I couldn't agree more! If you want an easier program that is just getting started and probably has a few glitches to work through, NSC may be ok for you. If you want a good education and to get your money's worth, go for the UNLV program, you won't be sorry. :)

How are the instructors at UNLV? Any difficult ones?

Sorry I just feel like I need to clarify some things and answer a few questions. First the new school in not Nevada State Henderson but Nevada State College. The web address is www.nsc.nevada.edu. Second the school has not had a class graduate yet. The first class will graduate in May 2005, my class.:) The program is currently not accredited but our official inspection is scheduled for Fall 2004. The school itself is fully accredited, so loans should not be a problem.

The other thing I need to clarify is that while some students might have transferd "for an easier/more manageable curriculum" I feel that most of us did not transfer for that reason and if they did they had a rude awakening when they started classes. The curriculum is not easier because it is the exact same skills and material that is used at the other schools. And more manageable, LOL. If anything my life has become more unmanageable since I transferd form UNLV because it is a new school that is trying to find its place. In terms of technological resources, and campus conveniences. You are partialy correct. The school is new which means that all of its technologies are new and state of the art. The school does not have a lot of resources on campus, however since we are all governed by the same Board of Regents all NSC student have access to everything that UNLV students or CCSN students do. All we have to do is show our student ID's. One thing you are totaly correct about is styles of learning to me UNLV is much more rigid while NSC is more relaxed, not when it comes to expectations or skills just in general, much more encourageing of the students, and the faculty are more available.

In regards to the concern about living 2 minutes from the strip. Don't worry about it. I lived in the dorms my freshmen year, ,and you don't even notice it. And I grew up in a small Nevada town of only 150 students in my highschool class, the big city was not a problem. UNLV's campus actually feals fairly isolated.

I agree, I'm not in the program, but if you look at the reqs for the program, they are the same (just about) The school is run like UNR.

Hi everyone. I am less then one week from the end of the semester @ UNLV and am stressing w/finals. I love what everyone has said. I am presently applying to UNLV and will be complet w/my preq's in August. Pending me receiving a "B" in Micro. I am taking it for my 2nd time. If I do not receive my "B" I cannot reapply for THREE YEARS to UNLV's program. I want my Bachelor's! (sorry momentary whinning...lol, I'm done now) I still have 2 more classes to complete my preq's. I want to go on to get my Master's in Midwifery. This has been a life dream for me for 18 years. I have been in school for 5 1/2 yrs now. I am ready to become a nurse.

I hope to hear from NSC tomorrow and head on over their to take a tour.

Well, my fellow Nevadans... I did not get my required "B", I got a B- instead. Funny how one grade can change all of one's best-laid plans! I looked very closely at the program and do feel that it may have been difficult for me to keep up my GPA, as required (w/my LD & Adult ADD achieving high grades are always a challenge!).

Thanks to this board I discovered Nevada State College and have applied to be in the Nursing program this fall (once again, pending grades) If all goes well I could be in this fall or spring. There is always my Health Ed degree to fall back on in the interm. I refuse to give up my dream and will continue working towards it, even if I have to cut back on my school schedule to work...(which I do not want to do, but family first!)

BIG NEWS!!! Hubby may have to get out of the USAF so we may be moving ONCE AGAIN June of 2005. I am happy for him, as he has been in for 23 yrs, but bummed because once again, I may have to change schools (we are wanting to move to Panama City FLA). The good thing is that at least we will be settled when we move there.
