UMB Spring 2012

Hello! I am in the process of applying for the spring 2012 semester at the Baltimore campus!! I didn't see any threads out there yet for people who are applying so I figured I'd start one :) Feel free to share gpa, TEAS scores, etc and any updates on admission!! GOOD luck to everyone!

Also what are people planning on doing as far as work? Are you working your first semester or not? I have been working at the same place for 8 years and have decided to leave as of the first week of January. I would really like to get something part-time at a hospital but also do not know what my clinical schedule will be yet so I don't know if I should wait to look for work or if I should just plan to take the first semester without work and focus on school. I really need to work but also really want to do well in the program. And after the first semester we will haev our CNA license so I guess I could pursue that. I just got my bill and I am just flipping out wondering how I am going to pay for all of this and focus on class. Ahhh!

Hargrove86- I have all of my books and that's about it so far. I read through the student handbook and it says khaki pants and white scrub top with the school patch on it. I still need to order my name tag, get some uniforms, stethoscope, lab coat (the one I used this year for Micro was splattered with Grams iodine!), and get my ID and parking pass as well. I am planning on going to campus next week to check out some things at the bookstore and look into getting my ID and parking pass then. How many uniforms did you buy? Did you go with a traditional black stethoscope or one of the colored ones?

Here's my schedule:

NURS 304 sec 01

NURS 304.2 Group 3 lab/module

NURS 315 sec 01

NURS 320 sec 04

NURS 333 sec 01

I am fortunate that I don't have to work- I have the Post 911 GI Bill. My husband will be gone the entire month of March though, and I have 2 young daughters (7 &4), so childcare is a big issue for us. Classes start so early and get out late- they will either be in school or childcare for about 11 hours some days. :(

I'd totally be interested in meeting up with some people as well. I do know one girl/lady from a couple of my current classes who is starting the CNL program, but otherwise I don't know anyone at UMD. I'm so excited/nervous to get started!

Tippeny - thanks for the info on the uniform. I couldn't find where it said specifically, so I appreciate that. I have 3 sets of uniforms simply because the guy I bought the books from gave me his uniforms and lab coat as well. I need to get some women's scrub pants as the men's just look strange on me, but the tops fit and have the patch already.

I got a colored stethoscope. Ceil blue with my name on it so *hopefully* it won't be stolen! Got it through medisave with coupons for free shipping. Checkout their facebook page or retailmenot.com to find coupons so you can save some money if you decide to order online. Couldn't find the stethoscope anywhere else for less. And I can hear out of it unlike the stehoscopes we used in A&P II lab which had me seriously worried that I was deaf!

Good for you for doing this with 2 children and deployed husband. That is another level of complication I just do not have. I have a ton of respect for you for keeping everything together. Just think of how great what you are doing is for your children in the long run. 2 years of childcare and seeing a little less of mom, will eventually really pay off and they should really look up to you for all the hard work you put in. I really admire anyone doing this with children and a family.

I am going to go to campus this week as well and go to the bookstore for my nametag and to the garage for my parking pass. I am going to try taking the light rail in from Hunt Valley as much as I can to save on gas and parking fees, but being a country girl, the public transportation kind of terrifies me haha. So I'm going to get a parking pass for the days I do just want to drive myself! I know we can also make our IDs online if you have a photo. I'm forcing my sister who is a photography major to take mine so I don't have to go in and do that.

But, yes, I would love to meet you and some other people prior to orientation. Like you, I am excited and terrified at the same time. Well, I hope to meet you sometime soon. Enjoy the holidays and time with your family :)

Baltimore campus people- what times are the orientation again? I know it's Jan 18 & 19, but the times aren't listed on the site.

Is anyone planning on going to the Baltimore campus SON 'mixer' on January 10th. I'm not sure I can make it (it's from 4-6) but I may be able to get there for the first hour or so. Just curious!

Also, if anyone hasn't gotten their scrubs yet, I was just at Scrubs and Beyond and if you have your student ID you get 5% off your purchase. It's always nice to save money- even if it's just a little :)

I won't be able to make it to the mixer, I'll be working that evening and unable to slip away for a bit.

And thanks for the heads up on the discount at Scrubs & Beyond! I gotta head in to Baltimore and pick up my ID soon. Actually, I have a lot of stuff I need to do. EEEEK!

AprilAnney- I got my ID before the holidays, but don't carry it with me. At the scrub store, I used my AACC ID with no trouble. They have a nursing program so it was fine.

For everyone going to the Baltimore campus, orientation times are listed on the SON website. If I remember correctly they are Wednesday 8-4:15; Thursday 11:30-4:15. Looking forward to meeting some of you there!

Hi

I don't know if you guys already talked about this or not but I have a question. We are suppose to subscribe to Neehr Perfect which is required for the N304 and N333 courses. And on the website they have choices whether you need it for 12 month, 6 month or 15 month. And the price depends on that so what I am trying to figure out is Will we need it just for this semester or for more. Should I do for 12 month or 6? I need help.

Temem - I have to look into that. I never saw anything about Neehr Perfect. Where does it say we need to subscribe? Thanks for the heads up.

I was unable to attend the mixer as well. Did anyone go? If so, how was it?

Has anyone been able to get into the classes on Blackboard? I e-mailed one professor and she said the classes would be active as of the 8th, but I have not been able to get into them yet. Has anyone started reading and preppping?! I really need to get on that!

And thanks for the info on the discount at Scrubs and Beyond. Just for anyone who still needs scrubs...I have 3 pairs of size medium Cherokee unisex cargo nursing scrub bottoms in khaki. $20 for all 3 pairs if anyone would like them.

Anyone want to meet up at orientation? I have this feeling I am going to feel so lost!

Hargrove86- Blackboard worked for me today. NURS 304 is up and running. Tons of info on there. I have read the recommended reading for Pathopharm and just started the Health Assessment stuff. I really enjoyed the Pharmacology reading- I suppose that means I'm going in to the right field, huh? Or, I'm just a nerd! :specs:

I haven't heard or read anything about Neehr Perfect either, but the info on NURS 304 recommends bringing a laptop to the 1st day of class to access some info. I guess we'll find out all of that stuff either at orientation next week or in the 1st day of classes.

Hargrove, I'm not sure, but if you haven't made arrangements for payment of your tuition yet, it may be keeping you from accessing Blackboard. I'm assuming that you've gotten your UMB login/password, so if you are entering that into the Blackboard login, and are being refused access, it could be that your registration is incomplete. Early last week, I couldn't get on; as soon as my tuition bill payment was processed, I had no problems.

If you are sure that everything is complete, I'd contact IT re: your inability to access BB. There's only one course listed so far, but there's a ton of info. Even if you don't have time to read everything, it will help you to have things organized when class starts week after next.

Keep in mind that there's a med calc test the 2nd week in. There's lots of instructional info/practice problems on BB, and this is a good time to get that out of the way (unless you're lucky enough to be able to do med calcs in your sleep).

I don't check into AllNurses very often these days, so if you have any more questions, email me at [email protected].
