with pediatrics you need to know normal child growth and development patterns. this is important when assessing children because you need to observe any difference in the behaviors they are exhibiting because children, in general, can't tell you what is wrong with them like an adult can.

i'm also giving you some other links on how to study for nursing tests. in case you haven't figured it all out yet, the application questions you get on tests require you to put a number of elements together in order to apply the question of priority to them. it requires knowledge of normal anatomy and physiology, the knowledge of many disease processes, standard treatments that will be ordered by the doctor, normal dosages of medications, the nursing process, appropriate nursing interventions and priorities.

if i'm not mistaken, vickyrn has posted a link to a good pediatric assessment tool on there. also, if you are a regular reader of these nursing students threads at all, you must know that i answer a lot of questions about nursing care plans. nursing process figures very prominently in the logic of answering questions on exams. assessment is the beginning step of the nursing process. you have got to know normal pediatric behaviors from abnormal ones because they are going to trip you up with those on test questions every time. know the sequential steps in the nursing process and how you get from one step to the next. the correct answers to many test questions can be directly traced to exactly where you are in the nursing process in that particular test question situation. this is all related to critical thinking.
