trouble finding a job...

Published

I graduated with my BSN in May and got my RN lic in Aug, I have been working since June filling in for a person on maternity leave as a scrub tech which is what I did for 6 years prior to getting my BSN ( I did an accelerated BSN since I already had another BS ) ... I would like to stay in the OR, but I am having difficulty even getting interviews for any type of position ... I moved to another state after I graduated ( I think had I stayed where I went to school I would have had no problem finding a job since the school I went too had a great reputation ) but.. I left to be closer to my aging father... every hospital in my area seems to want you to do an internship and they only have a few of them available.. in fact the hospitals tell you .. no new grads... how are you supposed to get experience if no one will hire you ? ... is this happening everywhere ?

I think you need to open up to places other than the OR. They seem to want people who have worked as an RN in the OR at the hospital I work at. I have never worked in an OR but it seems like it would be pretty specialized and ideally they want someone who has worked as an RN so things will run smoothly.

I would recommend trying to find a job then after a year or so you can do what you really want to do!

yes as I already mentioned in my initial post I have been applying for any and all areas.. but they all want the same thing.. experience... i did acctually have two OR interviews.. one they advertised as no exp required and after the interview process went back and changed the req online and called me back and said they decided to make it a one year min. exp req... 3 mos later those positions are still open... the other interview , I got called, scheduled and had to take time off from my present job, travel 1 1/2 hours away , when I got there the person interviewing me had someone in her office.. I was told to wait at the desk.. 20 minutes later I was told she had to go to a meeting.. I should call back later and reschedule.. since then she has been un reachable. imagine that..

This no job situation really hurts. Then for those of us who have a job and the people at the job constantly say "how come your still here" it can be really annoying. I am in New York and i have only gone on one interview since acquiring my license in april. I have a aas in nursing and alot of place wants a bsn with experience i dont even know what to do.

Just off the top of my head, I can think of eleven RN level nursing schools in my city and I probably forgot some of the smaller ones. Needless to say, getting a new grad job here is next to impossible. I graduated in June 2010 with a 3.3 GPA, passed my NCLEX in July (I was the first in my class to do so) and started my RN-BSN in September. After making >100 applications to hospitals and nursing homes, I haven't had one interview. I'm not even completely unexperienced; I worked PRN as an LPN throughout RN school and as a STNA for a while before LPN school. A few of my classmates (those who "know" someone ) have gotten jobs in areas that traditionally want experienced RNs (L&D, ICU step-down) although a couple of them have to retake the NCLEX. I'm considerably older than most of my classmates and I'm sure this is a handicap. At this point, I'm reconsidering the BSN. I'm not sure another year of school without gaining any work experience will help me land a job. Is not being able to get even a part-time med-surg job an omen? Waiting a few years for the economy and the job market to turn around probably won't be practical.....I'll be even older then. Frankly, I'm ready to give up. I went to nursing school because I saw how good nursing impacted my mother's final days and I wanted to give that wonderful gift to anyone needing it. Without a job though, I can't further my development and nursing skills rendering me useless in the clinical environment. Traditional nursing volunteer organizations can't even use me. Anyone got any advice or helpful ideas?

i woudn't be surprised if you were in this position for a very very long time. i just read an article in the paper where new nurse grads were having a difficult time finding work. alot of the reason is that the market is flooded with nurses right now, and some are not retiring like they should. just keep looking. try medhunters dot com or indeed dot com.
