Transferring from another unit?

Published

I've been on tele for a year (SNF for 2 years before that) and I'm ready to start applying to any and every posted L&D position until I land one, ha.

I want to stay in my hospital, but I don't know the first thing about trying to transfer units. Obviously I'm sure every hospital is different, but should I start by taking a detour one day to the L&D unit manager and talking to her? (I have never met her or him before). Apply & fill out a transfer form or just apply & only fill out a transfer form if I get a position?

First you're going to want to figure out the accepted way to go about transferring in your hospital. Your nurse manager is a good resource for this information -- you were planning on telling her first, weren't you? If you're lucky enough to have a good manager, she may be able to pave your way by getting the paperwork rolling, introducing you to the manager of the unit you're interested in, or just advising you on the unwritten rules for transferring. I've worked places where it was all paperwork, and others where introducing yourself to the manager of the unit you're interested in gave you a healthy advantage. Good luck!

At my hospital, there is a separate way of applying for a job for employees that are different from non-employees. It's a lot less stuff to fill out online and is a lot easier. See if your hospital has that.

Talk to HR and find out what the standard procedure it. I agree about talking to your NM and getting her input as well.

Good luck!!

I just finished this process, actually. I heard that positions were opening up so I emailed the L&D NM and simply introduced myself, spoke about how I was looking to expand my skills set and explained that this field of nursing had always been sparked an interest in me. Immediately after, I mentioned the email to my NM. She was very appreciative of me being upfront with her and respected the fact that I was being proactive and following my dreams. She met with the L&D NM, gave me a great recommendation & I got an interview and soon after, the job! I know not all NM are as understanding, so do so carefully but for me, it was entirely worth it! Best of Luck to you!
