Torn on whether to apply for this job

Hi all!

I have been at my current nursing job for a year and 9 months now. I enjoy the work itself but I'm on night shift and haven't adjused. I've tried everything but just cannot get proper sleep. There are no opportunities to transfer to day shift as we are very short staffed on nights. For this reason, I've really wanted to leave. I've hesitated because I don't want to be a job hopper and I like to stay as long as possible at one place. I have a second casual job which I LOVE and have been there almost 4 years. I plan on staying here but there just isn't enough work to make ends meet. Anyways, there's this place hiring that I've wanted to work at forever but they haven't been hiring until now. I understand that the grass isn't always greener but night shift is killing me. Opinions on whether I should apply? Or is it just too soon to leave my current job on nights?

Never hurts to apply... there is nothing that says you will even be offered the position. Might as well apply, interview etc and if an offer comes, cross that bridge if it applies!

Having worked multiple places in 35 years of being a nurse, I wouldn't label you as a job hopper, NurseKay.

I would definitely apply!! You may not get it, you may make a contact that leads to a different job at this other place at a later time... or you may get the offer!! None of those sound like a losing situation to me.

I don't think that leaving one job after 91/2 months makes you a job hopper. If you did that for several years in a row... then maybe, but I think the stigma there is wearing off and people are more transitional in there jobs then use to be when I was younger, back then you started somewhere and worked there for life... both nursing and non-nursing... the world isn't that way anymore. People move around to get the area, offer and lifestyle they want and it's more acceptable.

I would go ahead -- by the time you'd actually be starting the new job you may be closer to the 2 year mark anyway.

You've been at your current position for over a year, so I would say that's probably enough time to show you made a commitment. I would say it can't hurt to apply if it's something that appeals to you. They might say no, but it's a definite no if you don't go for it! Good luck

Apply!!! By the time you apply, get an interview, hopefully get/ accept job, work notice at old job your 1 year 9 months will be almost 2 years. 2 years is a very respectable amount of time to resign from a job that was a bad fit and certainly doesn't make you look like an unreliable job-hopper.
