To the RN's in research

Hi There,:)

I am a new RN interested in a career as a research nurse. What should I do in preparation for this? How many years of experience in M/ S for instance do I need?

My areas of interest in reserach so far are anything in the lines of Diabetes, Obesity, and heart disease.

Hi Dee..I would recommend at least a year of clinical experience if you are a new nurse. Doing M/S would be extremely helpful in the areas you are interested in. Good luck!

Other than a part time job I took on 6 months ago, I've only worked as a research nurse. I am ADN prepared (but I also had a 4-year degree, although not in anything applicable).

On my campus right now are two diabetes-related research jobs which still have not been filled and my colleague is willing to take a brand new nurse...and one fo the jobs allows for the hiree to get a CDE as on-the-job training.

Yes, experience is great -- but if you want to start applying for research jobs right off the bat, go for it -- and get some of your hospital experience one weekend a month until you really feel comfortable with those skills. :)

Univ Oklahoma Health Sciences Center -- a CDE is a certified diabetic educator. The jobs are both in Peds, one is for a NIH funded study and the other is (I think) pharmaceutical trials/clinic nurse.

Sounds like hypnotic nurse does a lot of similar work that I do. I work for University of Florida Health Sciences Center.

Of course you don't NEED the one year of experience, but I would still recommend it. One of my friends did research right out of nursing school and then decided she wanted to do some PRN work and change to a more clinical job. No one would give her the time of day because she had no hospital/clinical experience and she had a very hard time. Plus the clinical background will you first-hand knowledge of patients with those diseases and how to better work with family members. Best of luck!! :)

I agree that a year of M/S nursing will give you a great background. Something you could do in the mean time is get acquainted with some of the terminology of research. It will help you to be able to talk the talk. Research is full of accronyms that are very confusing. You might check out the Association of Clinical Research Professional (ACRP) they have classes, but they are very expensive. Also, typing in clinical research coordinator and doing a search might give you some training programs. NIH has a free course of the protection of human subjects which talks alot about consenting proceedures.

ASSETS TO HAVE IF YOU ARE IN RESEARCH, RIGHT.??? I DO HAVE SOME DIABETIC EDUCATION BACKGROUND (WORKING WITH PATIENTS IN THE HOSPITAL, FAMILY, FRIENDS ETC) ANY LIKEIHOOD I COULD GET THE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS POSSIBLE POSITION THAT IS OPENED IN YOUR AREA.
