Tired of corrections...

I have been working corrections since 2003. I am tired, bored and not too happy with the management. I do like corrections, but feel I need a month or two off to regroup and feel like a 30 something woman again who doesn't go to prison to work 3-4 days a week. I was thinking of ER, but not sure if I could keep up with the pace. Has anyone left corrections and went into another field of nursing? :nuke:

Hi, sure people come and go into and run from corrections all the time. Follow your heart. Corrections will always be there! In fact in my area about 40% of the ER nurses have come into corrections and the ones I have talked with said they wish they did it sooner. I think there is more autonomy in corr. than in the hosp.. We have standing orders so don't have to call the Dr. for a Tylenol order etc.. Plus you don't know what is coming through the door next (similiar to the ER). Yeah Admin. doesn't seem to fully understand the nursing part of corrections but then again think about some of the foolish 'policies' in the hosp..

I suppose what I am trying to say is both jobs have the +'s and -'s. Try something new. Check with your union book to see if you can request to take a year off. You would have to request this from the Superintendend but if granted you will be saving your senority date and the ability to return to corrections if you want to. I wish you well! :nurse:

yep i worked corrections in Texas and Georgia-in large maximum security prisons, as head nurse. i left to go work ER-started a small rural hospital to ease into it, then went to work for the military in ER. then a short stint working a VERY busy civilian ER, and now i work for the military again but in PACU cuz, well, i hit the lottery of nursing jobs-Mon thru Fri 8 hour shifts, all weekends, holidays off, no evenings or nights, NO CALL, and healthy soldiers as patients. easy money. no stress. NONE. after all these years i finally hit the jackpot and though i really miss prison nursing, i simply cant leave the dream job. i will stay here till i am old and gray. would be STUPID not to!
