Thoughts about BSN-PhD?

....I think it is up and coming. I finished my ADN in 2001, my BSN in June 2005, and just started my PhD in nursing 2 weeks ago. I am so thrilled to venture into research and contribute to the profession of nursing!! Being that there are few programs across the US that offer this option, I wondered what your thoughts were?

With a PhD, you will be a great asset to the nursing profession. I'm a BSN student interested in pursuing a career in health policy, meaning I will need a Master's or PhD down the road as well.

Case Western had a great Phd program. They can intergrate nurses at many educational levels. It is also a great school.

You will be a great asset with that Phd.

Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio had(s) a bachelor's degree to doctorate of nursing program as well as a PhD in Nursing. Requirement was only a bachelor's degree and it didn't have to be in nursing. The program took people who knew nothing about nursing, started from scratch and taught them basic nursing and right on up to the doctorate level. On graduation you would be recieving a doctorate. Physicians and pharmacists go through the same kind of programs: from bachelor's (a Master's degree is not a pre-requisite for medical school) to doctorate and they can then be officially addressed as Doctor. The CWRU program was the first of it's kind for getting a doctorate in nursing. I honestly don't know if the program is still in existance, but it would be easy to find out by checking with them. You can also find out about the various PhD programs by writing to the NLN and asking for their publication of the accredited schools offering all levels of nursing degrees. They may have started publishing it on their website. I got this publication many years ago and it listed all NLN accredited schools offering AA, BSN, MSN and PhDs in Nursing.

USF has a BSN to PhD program here. It has some tough qualifications. But why repeat courses or have courses that are redundant. I think it's a great idea for those who know what they are after.
