This is a long shot.

Hello to all,

I know this is a long shot but, I need to find a place to get clinical hours for RN. I am currently in Fredericksburg, VA and going to school at Excelsior University. I have experience in nursing through the military. Just need to get that 500 hours started. Thanks for looking.

Is this the post graduation clinical hours to gain licensing as a graduate of Excelsior College? (I cannot find an Excelsior University in the US)

This is the current licensing requirement per Excelsior for VA BoN

Virginia

Initial Licensure:: Graduates applying for direct licensure will be issued a provisional RN license with requirements to work for a predetermined number of hours before being issued an RN license. For graduates who were LPNs upon enrollment with Excelsior College, the required number of hours to work with a provisional RN license is 250. For all other graduates, the required number of hours to work with a provisional license is 400.

Endorsement: Graduates applying for licensure by endorsement must have 960 hours of RN experience.

Have you spoken with the representatives at Excelsior or the VA BoN? Were you an LPN, you only need 250 hours of supervised practice as a provisionally licensed RN, non-LPNs need 400 hours. Not sure where you got 500 hours from...

The Excelsior grads I have known have needed to leave Virginia to get their clinical experience. They were unable to find any hospital in VA willing to take them on with a provisional license (since they are turning away hundreds of applicants with full VA licenses). One Excelsior moved to NC for a year to obtain the required RN clinical experience to be able to petition to get a regular RN license back in Virginia (the NC hospital required a 12-month contract as a condition of taking him on).

I agree with UVA Grad Nursing -- you will likely need to work outside of Virginia for the required 960 hour minimum required to endorse your license back into Virginia. Your other possibility is working in a Federal facility: http://www.usajobs.gov.
