thinking about NP, need advise

Hi all,

I am an RN and am thinking about making the move to NP. I currently work in Worker's Comp and love Occupational Medicine or Orthopedics. I am only ADN grad. Is it possible to go to NP program without getting BSN first?

Hello, raiderfan,:balloons:

A long as you have your RN, you can enter an NP program. Many do just this. You will receive the MSN/NP when you complete the program.

And, never say "only an ADN"......:p

I just wanted to add that all programs don't do direct ADN->MSN. My school does require a separate BSN first. So alot of programs do have that option but not every one so you have to check with the schools you are interested in.

Many (if not most) graduate programs do require a BSN for entry into an MSN program. However, there are some schools that offer an ADN-MSN program. Here is one link that will help you look for those schools:

All nurse practitioner programs are MSN degree programs, except for a few programs in CA that still offer an NP certificate (non-MSN). Graduates of those programs, though, can only practice in CA -- their NP credentials are not recognized by any other state, and they are not eligible for national certification (requires MSN).

All nurse practitioner programs are at least a MS, except for a few certificate programs. Several NP programs are now DNP, which is expected to be the standard in 2015.

any advise on programs out there? I would love to do on-line program.

Hi!

I have a question that I hope someone can help me with. Does anyone know of any schools where you can go ADN to MSN or NP without having your BSN? My mom has an ADN and has had it for 16 years, but really wants to go back to school. Thanks for your help.

Hello, lela186,

Have your mother check here for NP and/or MSN programs. This will be a start.

There are many programs that do this. As pointed out in previous posts here, many require BSN first, but, that is not for all programs.
