Hello everyone! I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to all who have posted helpful hints on IV starts. I was reading them the other day and committed all the hints to memory. I'm a rather new nurse and my track record lately with IVs is not good.

Well, don't you know-last night at work, I had an IV clot off (Little old lady, fragile looking veins.) I took a few minutes to review what co-workers had told me, as well as what I've read on all nurses.... No tourniquet, started low, DID NOT advance needle when I got the flash, just the cannula. Viola! got it on the first try.

Thanks again!!!!!

bravo!

pretty soon you'll be sharing those never-taught-in-nursing-school tips to newby nurses! nothing better than success, just go for it every time, unless the patients end stage renal with a shunt to one arm and you find only one vein, may want to call an expert to do the deed and not make any attempts or call in for picc reinforcements pronto!
