i have noticed on this list

many students in TX having so many problems in pre nursing / nursing students

i think there are waiting lists at all schools around the country but it seems as if people in tx are having an even harder time

harder schools , harder exams ..what gives ? that stinks

LOTS of people with great GPA's here in Texas. That's what makes it so hard to get in. At my school, it's all about comparing GPA's. There aren't many choices for schools and most of us have to commute.

I've wondered that myself, actually. Of course this is all IMO. When I was seeking out my options on whether I should go via the LPN/LVN route or the RN route and trying to find schools, there really weren't that many options for as populated an area as the DFW area is. I can only speak from experience for my area of course. And anyone from this area can correct me. When I lived in Fort Worth, the closest LVN school was roughly half an hour away and there was 3 RN schools surrounding me with waiting lists (that I know of). I just believe there are a high amount of students wanting to enter nursing school than the schools can actually accomodate (in the DFW area that is).

I hope I didn't misunderstand your question

Yep........same here. Last semester there were over 800 applicants to the nursing program, but they only take the top 100 [GPA], no waiting lists. The cutoff for last semester was a 3.51...wow. I'm hoping to apply in February. So far I'm pulling a 3.9, but I still have 6 classes to take.

Which is your nursing school? I'm curious.

I'm originally from Texas, now in California. I was considering going back to Texas for nursing school because there is also a big shortage of nursing schools here where I live now.

My friend told me there were 400 applicants for just 30 slots at the better program in my area, so they are deciding by lottery.

Hello and welcome to the great family of allnurses :)

I live in the DFW and the competition for nursing school slots here is FIERCE. I have applied at the local county college 3 times. The first time I knew I wouldn't get in, but the second time I had a 3.5 g.p.a and was listed as an alternate. I upped my g.p.a. to 3.62 and retook the entrance exam and finally got in. My school has approximately 400 applicants per semester for 100 slots. It's really tough. Another local university had a g.p.a. cut off of 3.7 or 3.8. It's just nuts!! I think it's because we are at a time where many professions such as IT have basically hit the wall and people find the stability they are looking for in nursing. It's a tough world here in the Lone Star State.

Well, if you carry a good GPA come to San Antonio - that's where I am. They have some very good nursing programs. There are 5 nursing schools that I know of. There are two BSN programs 1) University of Texas Health & Science Center and 2) University of Incarnate Word (private college - so a little pricey). The ASN/ADN programs are through two communities colleges, one of them has a very good reputation and prepares you to be an RN, the other one is aimed more for LVN's, and EMT's.. There is also a program that is done through one of baptist hospitals. I'm pretty sure its paid for (for the most part) as long as you sign a 2-3 year contract to work for them when you are done. I believe that one is primarily geared for LVN's.

Personally, I'm seeking to get into UTHSC for the fall 06' semester. I will apply in February, and find out in March if I make it. It is very competitive. It seems every semester the lowest GPA keeps going up. If you carry a 3.7 your pretty safe. The pre-requisites are pretty tuff, but then again it is a bachelor's degree. If you just want to be an RN San Antonio College (the community college mentioned above) is the place to go. I'm not sure about waiting lists or how many students they take, but I can find out if you would like. Just let me know.

I got into RN school on the first try but them I am a LVN applying to a LVN to BSN program way out in the middle of no where. But when I applied to the ADN programs in the area (DFW) I was rejected. For Dallas- Ft Worth to be such a big area full of buinesses and major university's , there are not enough nursing schools.
